Auspex questions

1) what space marine units can be equipped with an Auspex ?

2 ) does it have to be physically attached to the soldier in question ? ...if so does it take up a hand held weapon slot ?

I understand it allows a free round of fire vs units sneaking up , and that this free round of fire is given to the whole troop the Auspex is carried

...or am i being thick here ?

The Auspex is completely different to the Signum. But, mostly the Auspex has been removed from the game now if I remember correctly. Not sure though cause I remember seeing it in the 4th ed codices but not the 5th ed ones.

Basically its that little radio thing. It would have to be on the model if you can take it. Just put it in a hand or hanging off the "belt". But it does not take up a hand held weapon slot, as there are none. So the marine could hold it in one hand with a chainsword in the other, and have a pistol holstered and count as having a pistol and close combat weapon in assault.

In the Devastator Box (bought last week) it shows an option for the Devastator sergeant to hold an Auspex in his right hand

..hence my earlier question "does the Auspex take up a weapon slot ? "

Q ) In the 5th edition ...does the Dev sarge still get the option / ability to use / carry an Auspex ?

IF Auspex has nothing to do with the Devastator sergeants Signum ability , ( which is a default ability he always comes with, he has a signum backpack )

THEN as it appears to cost nothing ( but does do something ) and does not interfere with a weapon slot then it would be common sense to always include it

i hope some one can shed light on this , im kinda new to 40k

The kits didn't change from the same ones used when 4th edition was out. Not uncommon for this to happen. The directions that come with the kits do not reflect the rules, just how to construct the models as basically as possible.

So think of it as a decorative piece.

Auspexes have nothing to do with Signums, they are on the Dev Sergeant's backpack.

In 5th ed, they're just decorative... fun way to individualise your marines.

Yep, before the Auspex could let you scan for hidden enemies like Lictors.

Now they're just decoration.

The auspex (looks a lot like a PKE meter from Ghostbusters) isn't in the 5e Space Marine Codex. It does not take up a weapon slot. It's just a decorative little bit to make your marines look more interesting. I would hang on to them, and here's why. When I converted my Sternguard, I did it from non-Sternguard models. I found ones with veteran looking armor (lots of pennants and purity seals and decoration). A bunch of those guys had chainswords (which Sternguard can't have). Removing the chainsword hand and replacing it with an auspex hand saved me quite a bit of hassle.

so to be 100% clear the AUSPEX is 100% NULL & VOID in the 5th edition ?

Only codex I know that allows/uses an Auspex is the BT codex. Not sure about DA, but my space marine codex is right in front of me and has no mention of an Auspex at all. Sorry man

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Yes. It is only decorative. In codex: space marines that is.

Of course it makes sense. When there are a bunch of BDSM clowns doing Olympic gymnast routines throughout your unit, while also cutting off heads, you tend to get a bit distracted.

Correct. Codex Marines have absolutely no entry, use for, or effect from, the auspex bit.

The instructions you are reading were designed in 4th edition I beleive wich is why it references them/they have them on the sprue.

Might have been 3.5, can't remember.

To be 100% clear:

My Codex: Black Templars still has an Auspex. It has rules. It is a piece of wargear like a grenade. It does not affect weapons slots. Even still, I gave a few to my random troops because they look cool.

Your 5th edition Codex: Space Marines, Codex: Blood Angels, and Codex: Space Wolves do not have these.

Put them on whatever you want if you like them.
