So I've been playing this game for years and years and I get confused a lot about old and new rules.

Question: If you fire a pistol in the shooting phase, do you still get the +1 attack in close combat? The pistol rules make no reference to this scenario. For some reason I remember you can't... but then again I'm always trying to put my guys in overwatch

That is a very old rule that no longer exists.

Firing a pistol in the shooting phase has no bearing on Close Combat Except that you are allowed to assault as normal if you fire a pistol in the shooting phase.

Need to clear up that the pistol only grants +1 attack in close combat if you are also equiped with another type of close combat weapon. Otherwise you do not get +1 attack.

The pistol is a Range 12" shooting weapon, treated as an Assault 1 weapon. The Pistol is also treated as an extra CC weapon, regardless of whether or not you fired it that round. This is to represent both the semi-auto, close range shooting you can do with a pistol, and the fact that if you can't line up a shot in CC, you can always bash someone over the head with it.
