Sense my LGS changed ownership it has come down to us the players to organize and run our own tournaments. Currently my LGS has people taking up the reins for 40k and WarmaHoards however nobody has yet to run a Fantasy tournament. I really don't want Fantasy to die out at the store (which ultimately it wont, but still having a tournament is always fun.) Now on to my questions:

1) I'm debating between running it either at 2000, 2200 or 2500. I'm leaning towards 2200 because there are several people who do not have a 2500 point army and may not be able to make that jump just yet.

2) What sort of scenarios should be included? I'm going to avoid Watchtower at all costs, but besides that has anyone seen/played some decent non BRB scenarios?

3) I'm thinking there will be soft scores but they will only affect your overall score (not your individual match ups - those are on bp only).

4) I need to have a hard definition for a proxy and what is a unit filler. I know what a proxy is, unit fillers are just a bit more fuzzy. How much of the actual unit should be there? For example a hoard unit of Dwarf Hammers has the first 2 ranks full of hammer models and the rest filled iin with dwarf warriors (gw w/o shields). This in my mind is ok. The unit of chosen that are marauders is not.

All suggestions are welcome. I've never done this before and its really in the design stages currently. I would have to talk to the store owner to get a actual date thinking sometime in the winter. (Dec - Feb timeframe)

Hi Casper

I've never run a tournament, but I've played in a fair few so I thought I'd pass on a couple of thoughts.

1. With regards to the points level, there a few things you want to bear in mind. First up is whether you want everyone to have a fully painted army at the event, or if you're happy for people to use partially painted models.

Secondly, are you planning on using any comp or house rules? If not, I'd suggest going with 2200- at 2500, a lot of armies can get the nasty double Lords in and don't have to drop many toys to fit under the points cap. Personally, I love comp, I think it makes the game far more fun and competitive. However, plenty of people don't, so I'd suggest some sort of light comp to take out the usual double rares, stop people turning up with half a dozen war machines etc. There are plenty of good systems I'd be happy to point you towards to give you an idea of what I mean.

2. Personally, I don't like the scenarios. I prefer to just play Battleline, but I know some people disagree. The important thing to note is that if you do end up deciding to use Wathctower, you absolutely MUST ban the swift reform and enter a building nonsense. Also, limiting the number of models that can go into a building would be a good idea.

One option that I've not personally played under, but like the idea of, are mission cards- you draw up one for every game (so 3 in a 3 game tournament etc), and each player has to use one card each game, secretly noting it down. These could be to control more hills/forest than your opponent, to kill more special choices than their opponent kills, or to kill the enemy general. If someone achieves their objective, they get an extra 500VPs for example.

3. I despise soft scores with a passion. Mainly because I've come down on the wrong side of them before, because subjectively judging a number of different armies is never easy. However, I am massively in favour of separate awards for soft scores- top sports, top 3 painted, players painting choice, judges painting choice etc. I think it's really important to encourage people to turn up with nice armies, but I do think it's unfair to have those scores effect your battle score.

Proxies/unit fillers really has to come down to an army by army basis- someone might have a fantastic idea they've worked hard on, but only actually displays as much of the unit as someone who's using warriors instead of hammerers. My suggestion would be that if someone is going to use proxies/unit fillers, they should check with you in advance by explaining what everything is. However, as long as my opponent doesn't mind me asking them a dozen times what something is/is armed with, I have no problem with proxies/unit fillers.

After some more thought here is what i'm thinking (my opinion can change still).

Points will be 2400 (600 = 25%). Its simple there are, unfortnatly, several young kids probably will want to play so simple math here. Lists must include costs for individual items as well as total cost of the character/unit.

I'm currently thinking the senarios will be 1) Dawn Attack, 2) Dark Monoliths of Zhulgozar/Loot and Pillage/Something Else. 3) Batteline. There will be bonus points but I'm still debating those.

I probably should have clarified. Soft scores would only be added in for a "best overall" award (painting, sportsmanship and general scores combined).

Proxies/Unit Fillers will have to be approved by me (the TO) before the tournament.

One option I've seen for Watchtower is to replace the "auto-win" condition with just extra VPs.

So instead of the winner being decided by who controls the Tower, the game is decided by normal VPs with the Tower's controller getting an extra 500.

1) pick the points you think will be fun and fit in the time you have, a 3000 game will take longer than a 2000.

2) if you pick a non standard scenario then make sure its been playtested well

3) publish your soft score rules ahead of time,
eg
sportmanship (if you see alot of 4's something is wrong)
1 - i didnt like playing this person
2 - this was an average game
3 - i liked playing this person
4 - best game ever.

painting
1 - every model based and primed
2 - as above + every model has some paint
5 - every model has 3 colors in addition to primed color
7 - as above + bases are painted
10 - every model is fully painted/highlighted/shaded/lined or detailed
13 - as above + every base is flocked or modeled with more than paint.
15 - as above + cool conversions of some kind

4) proxy : the model is not the actual unit type eg marauder representing chaos warrior
substitute : the model is close but not the same, dwarf hammerers being filled with dwarf warriors with great weapons.
filler : scenic base in the middle of the unit to make it look cool, beastmen unit with a rock worship tower in the middle of it.
