Hey guys, i'm completely lost for army lists. I'm ill experienced with the gaming aspect of 40k, as for all of my career, i've just modelled and painted, but I now want to get into the game but have no idea where to start. I need your help.

whats the best SM army to run? A 'normal' one? A mech list? A gunline?

just as reference here's what I have that can be used to make some form of list (with you guys' help)

land raider (normal)
whirlwind
vindicator
2 rhinos
captain
command squad
2 tac squads - 1 unassembled, 1 with ML and flamer, sgt with PP and PW
5 shooty termies 1 with assault cannon
and I can probably get some more tac squads if need be.

thanks in advance guys, i really need your help.

Well, I'd take the 2 full Tacticals and mount them into Rhinos; you can combat squad them if required.
Then I'd take the Captain, Whirlwind, and Vindicator.
You could mount the Captain plus Cmd squad into the LR and let the shooty Termies take a walk.

Sounds good, any advice for captain/cmd loadout? Probably best to go anti infantry, and close combat oriented. I'm thinking something like plasma pistols and some lightning claws?
But then agian i'm terrible at gaming, and have no clue what to do (yet!)
