Hey,

Just wondering, could some recommend me a specific type/grade of sanding paper for plastic models? Just to get things perfectly smooth; I can never seem to do it with a file without starting to round the edges.

Somewhere in south-central England.

The emery board type of nail file you can buy at Boots is pretty good. Because they are stiff they are easier to manipulate over a model than sand paper.

There are three grades.

Emery boards for natural nails have a coarse side and a less coarse side. They are coarser than you want for super smoothing. They are red on the coarse side, sand on the fine side. Use these for heavy duty filing. They even work on white metal.

The next one is Salon Smooth Nail Files. These are dark grey. Both sides are the same grade, less coarse than the fine side of emery boards. Not perfect for super smoothing.

The finest are Cushioned Nail Files. Although both sides are the same jaunty pop art pattern, the grade is actually slightly different. Out of the packet you can see the difference by the sparkliness of the surface.

If you don't like the smoothest of the Cushioned Nail Files, get a sheet of the finest grade Wet and Dry paper.

Another alternative is the Squadron Sanding Sticks. These are a bit pricier than Boots nail files but they are clearly graduated from coarse down to extra-super fine.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.
