Subject: Venomthrope cover save question.

Okay, I'm a pretty big fan of Venomthropes considering i like to bring lots of MC's. The other day a question i hadn't really run into before came up when i had some Hive guard inside a building with Venomethropes standing within 6". When my opponent tried shooting at the hive guard i simply asked whether or not the Venomthropes cover save applied to the building the Hive Guard were in. We decided that it did, but i could definitely see the argument for both sides here. Whats everyone's opinion on this?

Well if your Hive guard were embarked in the building, then you can not target the hive guard at all and need to score a Destroyed - Wrecked or Destroyed - Explodes on the building before you can shoot at the hive guard. If it was a ruin, then you take the best save (Most ruins confer a 4+ so that would be better than the 5+ from the venomthrope. If this is not what you were asking, please clarify your question.

I would say no because the spore cloud extends to the Venomthrope and any friendly units within 6".
The building is not a friendly unit, it is a buliding with its own rules and AV.
The unit inside the building is a friendly unit, but can't be targetted directly anyway.
Unless you are taking about a ruin, in which case the 4+ cover save beats the 5+ spore cloud anyway.
EDIT:Nice Ninja DeathReaper!

buildings arn't friendly units when unoccupied, but as i see it they do become friendly when your own models embark on them.
they do count as a immobile transport vehicle. that seems like a friendly unit.

They don't count as immobile transport vehicles.
Look at page 79, infantry moves into and out of a building the same way as embarking and disembarking from a transport, that's it.
The building is never considered a friendly unit.
Therefore it will never gain any benenfit from any wargear saves.

In fact, there is nothing to suggest that occupied buildings have any relation to their occupants. You could even attack a building with your own unit in it.

Buildings are for all intents and purposes neutral ground. Effects that affect 'friendly' or 'enemy' models have no effects on buildings, regardless of who occupies them.
