It seems many dislike the several and growing versus threads in the 40,000 Index, I don't really mind but what is the problem you don't have to read them and can easily ignore them?

The biggest indicator someone is a loser is them complaining about 3d printers or piracy.

They are bad or they're bad
They do clutter up the board a tad but can be ignored.

They may start to get tedious.
Like anything else they start to get weaker as all the better theortitical contests have already been discussed?

Firstly OP, you need to work on your grammar. Secondly, I think that who would win threads need to die in a fire.

They're incredibly stupid given the low level of discourse. All it takes is for one fanboi to begin spouting about how SPARTAN shields are totally ubber and SPARTANs have been learning tactics since they were SIX YEARS OLD to completely drown the conversation in tit for tat fluff-flinging.

Yup. Hay guys who would win between(sp?) master chef a spesh mureen the emporer and a navy sael?

Answer: No one, and in fact, we lose the most. These threads are the reason why I miss out on good threads in 40k Discussions and even Dakka Discussions too often. I like to do a lot of my browsing at work, which means I never have much more time than just a glance at the main forum level for anything worth actually reading, which means that I keep an eye on the last message column. When it's stuff like "What army is your favorite?" "What 40k weapon would you be?" and "What space marine chapter is the best?", I don't click on it. I'm sure I'm not the only one. I mean, even "Who has the best basic troop?" is kind of a flawed topic, because, other than lacking a way to measure what the "best basic troop" is, you're also looking at the basic troop in a vacuum. It's not especially helpful.

The most frustrating thing is that I'm not sure what to suggest to make it better? Just ban threads that end in question marks? That doesn't seem helpful, since there's a lot of good threads that are in the form of a question. Perhaps what we need is a new forum called "40K Superlatives" Which could be home to all of these types of threads.

"By them", I'm getting annoyed "BY them".

I'll bitch and whine because it costs me more of my limited time to filter through those to find threads worth reading/posting in. Let's try a throught exercise:

"If you see spam in your inbox, and don't want to look at it, move on! Don't bitch and whine because it's taking up room for 'real' email.. email you care about.."

See what I mean?

They’re bad and people that like them enjoy the smell of their own farts.
They’re fine and should continue to be created by kids that should be doing something outside for the summer, like asking people in vans for free candy.

No, I do not..
Emails are actually relevant in some way-this is a website that people come on to have fun. Just cos you don't like it doesn't mean others don't..

Maybe the people who send you spam think that email is just a way to have fun. Plus, they're just trying to help you with cheap pharmac3uticals. They think you're the unreasonable one for not agreeing.

All I'm saying is that it generates threads that are only ever borderline on topic to begin with, quickly devolve into a debate about something not pertaining to 40k, and then eventually (hopefully) get locked due to increased levels of flaming as some Halo/StarWars/40k/USMC fanboi goes supernova on the thread and the mods get sick of trying to clean it up.

That doesn't really add value. It definitely doesn't help make Dakka be the awesome place I consider it to be. Explain to me what good they do other than just taking up space, please.

Which is kind of my point really, you don't get angry about spam because you have a filter. Dakka has no such thing.

Every discussion on Dakka seems to eventually descend in to fanboi vs fanboi and turns in to word flinging contests, with hardly anyone willing to change their stance on the topic.

That said, they are fun.

Which is, I'm sure, great fun FOR THEM. It's not their fault that the fun isn't experienced by all in the 'relationship'.

And honestly, when I go looking for intelligent discourse on the Internet, ( I know, silly, right?) I tend to go to Dakka. It's either here or Slashdot, and I don't need that level of condescending donkey-cave. When I'm seeing nine out of fifty threads on the first page of Dakka Discussions fit the criteria of posts I complained about above, I think I'm not being unreasonable about drawing comparisions between those threads and MOAR FREE PILLZ.

B) TRY and ignore the others
C) Stay underneath your bridge.

Which are all completely reasonable and mature recommendations, every last one; but none of them actually solve my problem, not do they explain to me as previously requested what good the other threads of note actually accomplish.

Maybe this is what I get from straying from P&M and Tactics.

I have no problems with fandom vs fandom comparisons, or "Vs threads", but I think that, when opening one, the OP needs to establish what's being compared, moreso than just "this guy" vs "that guy".

That is to say, OP in such threads needs to say "Space Marines as depicted from table-top rules, *no BL book-fluff!* VS The Power-Puff Girls *Seasons 1-4 only*!"

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

While the versus thread frequently devolves into a 'mai gai = win!' sort of nonsense fest, I think they are an integral part of the culture of gaming in general and wargaming in specific. It allows us to take what we know about either side, and extrapolate from that information to form hypothetical conclusions. It is an entertaining intellectual exercise. If you approach it correctly, it also creates an exercise in objective judgement. Some people can't get the hang of the latter, and so it spoils the former for everyone. All that aside, I still enjoy them for the mental puzzle aspect.

Fair enough.

My parting thoughts on the matter, however, include that at the end of the day, instead of being able to explain to me what good they do, purpose they serve, or value they add, you were quick to offer me snide and rude comments that added nothing to the value of this conversation. I'd say that the sea of fanboism and useless comments will find good company in you. I also suggest that we view the results of the poll as of so far:

They're Bad and should not be created 32% [ 10 ]
They're fine and should be created 6% [ 2 ]
Users are too biased to really have a proper discussion 19% [ 6 ]
Its fine 23% [ 7 ]
I don't care for them 19% [ 6 ]

Ignoring the poor wording and possible duplicate options, I seem to see that there are 9 people who seem to be in favor of them, 16 who aren't, and 6 who seem to think that they don't work as users are incapable of discussion. I felt as though I should lump them in the "I don't like bad threads" category, though I thought I'd give "your side" as much leeway as possible. That still means that only about 33% of people actually think said threads are okay. Mind you, this doesn't take into account all manners of selection bias/timezones/polling inaccuracy/etc, but I think it proves my point in a snapshot.

I wish you many productive hours of "Nuh-Uh! Matser Chef is rely rely bester then Abadon cuz he has a forcefeld!!!!" School starts back up in September, right?

They're bad and people who make them should feel bad. I haven't earnestly heard a conversation in person along the lines of "Who would win, a Space Marine or Darth Vader?" since I was 12. It usually comes down to "I'm a bigger fan of X so I'll vote for X" which means the results are usually woefully skewed. If you asked the Spartan vs. Space Marine quesiton on Bungie's forums, I assure you the Spartan would win, while the Marine would likely win here.

In short, they go nowhere and the results are always skewed. They're also popping up like weeds this summer and it's bothering me, just as much as the "Adopt a X" threads.

If you don't like a thread, don't look at it. Simple as that
Other people like these threads, that's why people post in them, you don't have to. You don't even have to look at them.

I kind of agree about this massive increase in polls and versus threads. Kind of ironic, this thread.

Only threads I really dislike though, 'adopt a something'. Well, actually I hate these threads. Alot, but I don't read them, so they don't really bother me that much.

I don't read these threads either, but when half of the first page is adopt threads and polls, it gets tiresome.
