As the title suggests, this thread is about gargantuan creatures and the 'Instant Death' special rule, and sometimes the lack of it. I have searched the internet and the You Make Da Call forum, but haven't been able to find a definitive answer, so here goes.

Under the Gargantuan Creatures section in the Apocalypse rulebook (p.91, 'Special Rules', specifically), it states that 'All gargantuan creatures are immune to the Instant Death rule. In addition, because they are so large and powerful, they are not affected by any attack that would normally kill a model automatically (like a Force Weapon, an attack that kills as a result of a failed Characteristic test, etc.). Such attacks cause D3 wounds instead.'

In the way I interpret this, considering the fact that apocalypse was written for 4th edition 40k and that 4th edition Force Weapons would not cause Instant Death, this means that any attack which causes Instant Death has the ID rule ignored and just causes one wound, while attacks that kill outright, bypassing ID immunity, would cause D3 wounds rather than killing the GC outright. What does YMDC think of this?

Thats correct.

Its also apocalypse, so decide within your group whatever makes the most sense to you.

The thing is, our opinions are divided. The Tyranid players, myself and Mr M, think in the way I described above, while our opponents, Evil Chris and Little Evil Chris, are arguing that weapons that cause instant death cause D3 wounds, because 5th edition FWs cause instant death and FWs are mentioned in the category of things that deal D3 wounds. I'm really asking the dakka community as a way of breaking the tie, as it were.

And the answer is: the old FW "slain outright" meant they did D3 wounds; they now cause ID so they only cause 1

You should get IA:Apoc 2, has some good updates to the rules.

I'll certainly try to get my hands on it, and if it clarifies this rule, then you, sir, are a godsend

It doesn't matter wherever it causes Instant Death or is "slain outright", it is an effect that would remove the target from play, therefore it only causes D3 wounds vs Gargantuan Creatures.

No Valk, ID does nothing more than cause 1 wound - not D3
