there should be a method where you just add/subtract troops firing , hits, wounds and saves and then apply a " fudge factor" that will give you a " ballpark figure " for the number of kills

You don't really have to do multiplication and division.

All the fractions you need are 1/6, 1/3 and 1/2 combined with the ability to do simple division.

Say you have 20 guys rapidfiring (40 shots) BS3 S5 against T4 models with a 6+ save (tau firewarriors against orks gone to ground). That means you need 4+ to hit, 3+ to wound, and he saves on a 6+.

4+ to hit means 1/2 will hit. 1/2 of 40 is 20. So you can expect 20 hits.

3+ to wound means 1/3 will NOT wound. 1/3 of 20 is 7. 7 will not wound, 13 will wound.

6+ to save means that 1/6 will NOT die. 1/6 of 13 is 2. 2 save, 11 die.
