I've seen some army lists that discuss putting your rifleman (more likely psyfilmen) dreadnought behind a Rhino chasis and firing over it to the enemy, yet getting a cover save.
Anyway, I was playing with this at my house and when I put my dreadnought behind a rhino it's pretty obvious to me that the autocannons abut the rhino. Don't we look down the barrel of the guns to determin LOS? If I put my gun facing the enemy, it's can't draw LOS from the gun barrel as the rhino is right in front of it. Am I missing something, or am I right in assuming that if you get cover from the rhino like this, you can't shoot through the rhino with the dreadnought.

Yes, you use the barrels to determine LOS. If there is something physically infront of the barrels then you cannot shoot

The thinking for my area is as as nosferatu said. Ergo, some guys simply angle their guns up and over the rhino so they can shoot stuff and see it. However, this to me is borderline cheating and just bad play, as there's no way you can rationalize shooting at something in front of you with a 80 degree arced up lascannon/autocannon shot.
Others in my area have thick bases; my Dreads are on really thin bases from a freind so their weapons can only see over a Rhino if I angle them up. Some have thick bases so, say, the top lascannon of a twin-linked lasdread can see over the rhino, but that's just modeling for advantage.
I personally refuse to do this as I feel that at this point I'm not playing a fun tactical game and am instead playing a plastic army men game with rules I can use to my advantage. Just my opinion.

WEll it cannot fire - you only have 45 degree vertical firing arc.

As far as I've seen, a dreadnought on the scenic base it comes with is able to see over a rhino from the barrels of it's AC without much problem. You would confer a cover save to any infantry you were firing at, but that's not that big of a deal

It depends on what Auto-cannons you have.
if you used the Aegis Defense line autocannons, the top barrel is well over an inch above the top of a rhino.
I would say this gives a 4+ cover to all its targets. RAW, you could argue no cover save as we arn't told that you have to have LoS to both Barrels in the case of guns with multiple barrels.
4+ cover is the logical compromise with these auto-cannons.
as GW doesn't sell Dred auto-cannons you must either go Forge World or Aegis Defense line(Aegis is cheaper and you get some terrain ) or scratch build your own.
BTW, there isn't a rule about Modeling for advantage and people tend to go with what looks cool for things that must be scratch built.

I don't think a vehicle would ever get cover from it and that's what you would be shooting at the majority of the time. Unless the vehicle you were shooting at was right in front of the rhino you are generally able to see more than 50% in my experience.
A lot of the people at my flgs play DE as well, so it's hard for them to claim cover when they are floating in the air

true, but I would go the route of least conflict in this case unless I clearly could see the entire vehicle.
