Hey Dakkanauts!!! Tehbarry here! As the title says, do you think it is worth a shot to try selling some custom bases I've made? I don't have that much money as I am underaged, and It came upon me that I could try selling bases... So yeah, what do you think? Would I be able to sell them and call them nurgle bases or some other name from 40k?

You would definately have to change the name. Anything related to GW games will earn you a C&D letter from GWs lawyers. You will need to stay away from GW logos too.

There are a lot of companies making bases. You can still make money doing it but but you will need to be original. There are enough standard fantasy/sci fi bases that are better known and probably cheaper than you can sell them.

To compete you need to make bases that aren't already out there. Coming up with new ideas that people will want is going to be harder than making them.

Yeah, try contacting a company specialised in creating selling casts from the community, such as trollforged, give them a call. You will need to rename them, just slightly name, pestilence, disease, whatever, you can make it obvious what they are meant to be without infringing any copyright.

But what about all those modelling studios that make things such as terrain and then sell it meanwhile calling it ork terrain, necron terrain or such things? Ex: 3t-studios.com or bluetablepainting.com

What do you mean with contacting them? For advice? Sorry, I'm kinda tired, so I'm not thinking that straight....

They will cast and sell them for you, giving you a portion of the proceeds. I think it was troll forged, but if someone else to either confirm that or point this fellow in the right direction?

Those companies most likely have to pay GW to use those names in the terrain because i am almost positive that GW has Trademarked those names.

What names? Nurgle? I already said that simply changing it to 'diseased/pestilence/decay ect.' you can sidestep that.

no, he was talking about how the companies used names like necron terrain and other things, and i was saying why you cant use the exact terrain. I know you can change it up a little and make it legal

Ah I didn't see that, my apologies, I assumed you were talking to me, but OP I would recomend contacting a company that would cast them for you, the Painting and Modelling section might be a good place to post.

Why get a company to cast them for me? I could just do it myself and thus get all profits?

As it is a recognised company that us hobbyists are familiar with, there is a higher chance of them selling, and if you have never done it before you have the costs ect. that you need to consider, along with a new company, site, and everything else that entails.

Yeah, winnertakesall, has some good points here. It can take a lot to convince strangers that your not just trying to steal their money.

Yeah, troll forged is definately a good idea. They are a well know company, so people will trust them more and by having them on TF's website people are more likely to see them. More people will see them when they browse TF site than if you try to personally advertise them.

It's also a lot easier for you. You don't need to bother with production or selling.

Are you going to sell everything on ebay? I may be wrong about this, but i dont think you can just buy up a bunch of bases, paint them and then commercially sell them acting as a company. That would be like a gas station just buying up a ton of 7UP and then selling it without recieving the original manufacturers permission. If it was all ebay, that would be just like selling models on ebay. if you got a company to cast for you, then you could just buy directly from them and not risk breaking a patents or copyrights(not sure if GW has one on its bases or not?). i could be completely wrong here, but i dont think you can just buy up bases and resell them without a liscense from GW

After thinking about it a bit, I can see where your coming from. When I was younger, I thought about selling terrain, I think most people play with the idea at one point or another. However, based on all the reasons presented, it really is a lot of work, and something that I never pursued. That's not saying you can't look into it, but selling items on a large scale isn't something you can do half way.

If your short on cash maybe a part time job? I worked in a warehouse and then unloaded produce trucks when I was in highschool. I'm sure there is something in your area.

I am most definitley not saying "dont do it" im just saying there are things to watch out for
