Thinking of getting into Beastmen came up with this 1k list to start:

Great-Bray-Shaman- Level 3 -Jagged Dagger -Talisman of Endurance - 240
Wargor -BSB -Heavy Armor -Shield -Dragonhelm -Gnarled Hide -Dawnstone - 166
Gor Herdx29 -Full Command -Additional Hand Weapons - 257
Ungor Raidersx5 -Musician - 33
Ambushing Ungor Raidersx5 -Musician - 33
Beastigorx20 -Full Command - 270

Total: 999

Also what is a good lore for the Shaman, I am guessing Beasts but am unsure.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

I would drop the jagged dagger. It likely wont do you much good at all. Just give the shaman additional handweapon and power stone or scroll of shielding. Otherwise its a nice list for 1000 points. Give the shaman lore of beasts. Spam augments and use its offensive capabilities or the final transformation with a power stone if you fancy a last ditch trick or gamble. Though death or shadows are good if you want to go all out aggressive. Its better in my opinion having a cheap extra shaman for that though.

Oh and also drop the unit champion from the bestigors and the musicians from the ungors. Give the wargor the ironcurse icon for a nice ward save versus artillery for the unit. And give the bestigors the banner of eternal flame. Flaming attacks are crucial versus some enemies for knocking off regeneration.

Small tweaks but they help tons. All the best!

What he said.

Only thing I would add is to maybe lose the Raiders all together, and then buy some scouting harpies.
You want something more reliable to hunt warmachines than one ambushing unit. One shot from a 75 point mortar could cost you the game.
At a 1000 points I definately see the point of using Ungors instead of Gors, but it really is a matter of temperment.
Other than that I really like the list.

Thanks for the input guys. Having listened to the awesome podcast on Bad Dice of Mark Wildman's Beastmen tactics I have altered a list to take advantage of the tactics.

Great-Bray-Shaman (Shadow) -Shard of the Herdstone 244
Wargor -BSB -Heavy Armor -Enchanted Shiled 119
Bray Shaman (Beasts) -Dispell Scroll -Ruby Ring 125
Gor Herdx40 -Full Command -Additional Hand Weapons 345
5 Harpies 55
Razorgor 55
Razorgor 55
998

As I expand to 1500 I'll drop a Razgor bump up the GBS to level 4 and add on Hagtree Fetish, add in another Bray Shaman with Staff of Darkoff and if I can add in another 40 Gor Unit or a 30 Beastigor Unit.

Hargus, you have a good list going, but not enough points to use it correctly. There's really not much you can do at 1k, mark wildmans advice (which I've used to great effect) is really meant for a much higher point range (2500).

Your paying a lot for mages at 1k that will only give you +2 power dice, and will be quite vulnerable since you don't have much else in terms of target saturation.

Herdstone and bray shaman spam really shines when you can take 3-4 and spam miasmas out while generating tons of power dice through the herdstone and jagged dagger GBS.

Thanks for the advice. I haven't much played past 1500 pt games, just based on time restraints and stuff. How would this perform at 2k?

Beast Lord -Heavy Armor -Shield -Gnarled Hide -Dawnstone 194
Great Bray Shaman Shadow-Level 4- Hagtree Fetish -Tailsman of Preservation 300
Wargor -BSB -Heavy Armor -Enchanted Shield 119
Bray Shaman Shadow -Staff of Darkoff 125
Bray Shaman -Shadow -Shard of the Herdstone 125
Bray Shaman -Beasts -Dispell Scroll -Ruby Ring 125
Gor Herdx35 -Full Command -Additional Hand Weapons 305
Gor Herdx35 -Full Command -Additional Hand Weapons 305
Beastigorx25 -Full Command -Standard of Discipline 345
5 Harpies 55

You really need the beast banner (+1 strength) on your BSB which means he can't take any magic items. Give him heavy armor, a shield, and gnarled hide so he is survivable.

I would give your beastlord at least a great weapon. Blackened plate and/or crown of command are also really good on him if you have points.

Other than that it looks pretty good. The ruby ring, staff of darkoff, and hagtree fetish are used in unison to kill off annoying skirmisher/scouts that are pestering your mages.

Thanks for all the input Skelly. One final question, as I am about to jump into beastmen, do you find them fun and competitive?

Yes, I find them actually very competitive. I am unsure if it is the fact that most players view them as being incredibly weak, but I am currently undefeated after having just started, and I play against strong lists (Skaven with Aboms, warp lightning cannons, and huge slave blocks etc).

The sheer amount of damage beastmen can put out in close combat is near unrivaled thanks to primal fury and buffs/debuffs through magic phase domination. (Beastmen have insane magic potential)

Once players catch on to this type of playstyle (The big gor blocks with herdstone and miasma spam) it may weaken a bit, but so far I am having a blast! It's so fun taking on top tier armies with one of the "perceived" lowest tier armies and massacring them.

It still takes good generalship to win however, don't get me wrong, this army is no where near broken by any means. Just wanted to point out that in the right hands, it has the potential to be both very fun AND competitive.

Give the beastlord the ramhorn helm and the +1 initiative gift. Its cheap and hell rack up combat res very fast.

Otherwise I like this list. Lots of magic. But maybe cut back to a lvl 4 with 2 lvl 2s. Otherwise your going to run out of power dice. Make the 2 lvl 2 shaman lore of beasts and give them nothing or a dispel scroll to one. Let them spam augments on your gor blocks. Give the bestigors the banner of eternal flame or the +movement one.
