So i used to play Fow a while ago, but was into GW stuff over the past 3-4 years. Being unable to take GW and the way they operate anymore, me and alot og gaming buddies have been forced to look for alternatives.

many of us have old FoW armies. I dug up my mid war americans which drops out to about 2000 points using the north africa book for MW.

My question is though, since about 2008ish has FoW shiffed its focus to late war?

what is the general period played now? Back when we were into it, it was all MW. late war wasnt even out yet and was just a rumor.

either way we are all full on into FoW now and pumped to be back. having so much fun (mostly compared to the bland and imbalanced nature of 40k).

which leads me to another question, is FoW split between power armies and fluffy armies? just curious about this one really. our group seems to have a lot of fun with out random lists. so we are happy at the moment.

cheers

I haven't played for very long, but I haven't really seen a lot of favouratism for any one period. I play everything but late, as I would rather have a swarm of questionably reliable tanks vs 1 giant angry one. As for certain armies being more powerful, I have noticed my friends russian tank horde cleaning up a lot of opponents, although thats mostly because people have trouble dealing with that many tanks.

One question I do have is why are you so upset with GW?

Just my 2 cents

I would say FoW is very balanced in terms of armies.

Now, I will admit - don't go taking a list centered around 8 panthers or a few Tigers, since that'll put you at a big disadvantage. But since your a returning player, I'll just assume you know your way around the game.

Late war has been out for a while now, and it's the Era that I play in (since it's the most 'iconic' part of the war, and the one that most people will recognize).

In fact, if you're not too big into LW, they actually have an Early War book out now!

Most of us are into MW. we all have armies that revolve around stalingrad, tunisia, sicily, desert rats/fox. a few of us have been looking at the late war stuff and whistling tho.

british para/airlanding troops look like fun. 17 pounders yes please.

I personally happen to like the Cromwell tank, especially when it gets to Move at the Double for 36"!

And speaking of 17 pdrs, boy do I love me some Fireflys!

I would say late war is most popular, by a large margin, but that might just be because late war has like a dozen books dedicated to it, and mid war has what, one or two?

5 books for Mid-War, IIRC, but then again the D-Day compilations that Battlefront just came out with does a good job of taking care of most of the Western Front.

From an outsider-looking-in view (I have a couple FoW books, would happily play a game with someone that knows the rules, but just don't have the motivation to buy, build, and paint a few thousand points) it seems like they're supporting all three eras now, with a current focus on Early War as it's the newest.

On the other hand, it seems like there's some lag in the community, but from threads here and elsewhere it seems like a lot of game stores and clubs end up settling on one time period as their primary core.

There was a note in a podcast I heard about a neat tournament where Round 1 was Early War, Round 2 Mid War, and Round 3 Late War... You had to stick to the same nationality, but fielded what was sometimes a very different list between eras as the armies evolve. (I think they said that there was a note that French->US or similar.)

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

That is an AWESOME idea for a tournament, but I think we have a couple months or years to go before enough people switch to early war for that to be feasible (as I understand it, early war hasn't sold very well).

It's not mine... I think it was the "What Would Patton Do" podcast that mentioned it.

We just finished a 6 month early war league in our neck of the woods. I bought a bunch of tanks for early war, but most everything else I needed I already had in one form or another from midwar. Not going to buy a bunch of 2pdrs, infantry and artillery just to paint them for early war europe instead of MW Africa... Unless someone changes countries crossing genres there is a lot of mini reusability that can happen hence lower sales for the new genre that comes out.
