Subject: The D6 Generation Ep 82: Hotness or Notness & Star Trek Expeditions Review
Someone on the show is a Trek fan... can you guess who? When Star Trek: Expeditions hit the streets, the crew just had to review it. Well, two of us did. Does it do the series justice?
But up first: Hotness or Notness. With Con season upon us, lots of new games are in the pipeline. What are Russ, Craig, and Raef excited about, and what are they less than thrilled to see?
All that and our other not-too-horrible segments including:
- The Hollywood Minute
- Total Fan Girl
- Do You Ever Notice
- & More
Yeah, I figured it would sound like that after the fact. Nothing quite that exciting, unfortunately. And the Other was actually just me running with the theme

Halfway done with listening to the latest Episode. Good so far, as always.
There are plenty of options available for ship-to-ship Star Trek gaming. I put together a game using Star Trek ships models but using Full Thrust from Ground Zero Games.
I'll spare the details here. If interested, you can read more at the above link. I took the game to Spring Recruits in March. My players had a blast. Pics from the event can be seen on the con's website here:
Great show, guys. I agree that Warpath has great potential for hotness and that Star Trek game sounds pretty cool. It's use of the movie characters does disappoint me, but maybe they'll be able to branch out into other areas of the IP with future releases.
As much praise as the movie got, I think that it's appeal will diminish over time since it pretty much guarantees we'll only have movie versions of Star Trek for the near future and it complicates things for whenever they decide to do a tv show again. They'll probably only be able to get 2-3 movies made over the next decade and after that I'd doubt they'll be able to get everyone in the cast together for more. Well, unless each movie makes tons of money and they can throw buckets of it at the cast. But that being said, Star Trek works much better as a TV series and I look forward to the day when there's a good version of it in series format.
Also, I just wanted to ask why does Russ always mispronounce frustrate?

HokieStone: The Armored Hokie video is pure win!! I'd not seen that before. I particularly like the end when he looks both ways to cross the drill field
bbb: Why do I mispronounce frustrate? Why would I not? I mispronounce everything else!

Great pic's Yukon. Those models look nice. I'd love to try that out. About how long does a game take with that rule set and say, 5 ships per side?
Playing with say, three destroyers and two cruisers, a game could be done in under an hour and a half. The game in the pictures had 9 Klingon and 8 Federation ships and was played to completion in just over two hours and four of the six players had never played Full Thrust before. Perfect for the legendary "Tuesday Night Gaming?" I think so.
Full Thrust is a great system, even if it is a little older and perhaps showing its age. No matter what, start with Full Thrust Light, which I link to on my page. It will help the player get an understanding of the core mechanics and procedures before delving into the full game.
The best part about it is it's totally free to download. However, that comes with a caveat. The "most recent" rules, Full Thrust II, have been added on to with More Thrust and then two Fleet Books. The first fleet Book totally revamped many of the rules. Think more like 40k 2nd edition to 3rd edition than WarmaHordes to WarmaHordes Mk II.
Lock and Load was an awesome event with some extremely awesome terrain. I got to play on the train scenario table, which was awesome.
On Star Trek, how would it play with just two players, or is that even a possibility?
Good luck with your goal, Craig. I've been doing something similar, although with less public humiliation. If I lived in the area, I'd join the Spartan Race to make sure that someone put in a worse showing.
I just finished the Hotness or Notness segment (I rather like the title, btw) and had a few thoughts on the Mantic games and, perhaps, why they don't seem to be gaining traction as a ruleset.
I know for myself I love having a nice, printed rulebook with lots of fluff, and illustrations and whatnot in addition to the rules. I suspect many gamers are the same (not all, mind you). So while the Kings of War ruleset (and soon, Warpath) are short, tight rules they just aren't a draw for me in their current format.
That, and the timing was bad. After all my many years of being a gamer I just got into WHFB just prior to Mantic releasing their rules.
I think Russ also was correct when he surmised that Mantic just doesn't have a critical mass of models available yet. If someone doesn't want to play Elves, Dwarfs or Undead at this point they are not likely to consider Kings of War.

Great show guys !! lotta fun . Craig i saw a lot of battletech pics on the D6gen photo feed ! is that your secret project ? you should do what im doing battletech 28mm less record keeping because you'll only have room for about 4 mechs a side !
Thanks for the words, folks. And for the encouragement. Just went on my first run with the baby in a runner's stroller . . . never noticed how many hills my standard route has . . .
And um . . . no, it's not Battletech. I bought the starter box back in grad school and the models in it sucked then. The fact that the 25th anniversary boxed set has the exact same models (admittedly with 2 much cooler models) was the ultimate turn off that caused me to decide not to pick it up (that and I'm just not a big hex guy).
But I must say . . . 28mm Battletech . . . Wow . . . just, wow . . .
Back to fitness: listener Jeff Stachnik turned me on to the 5k Orc Stomp Fun Run at GenCon . . . and I think I'll be doing that. I have to do a bit more research first. If it's a charity event I think I may be able to figure out a way to entice a few other listeners to join me . . .
Ciao for now!

Yes, we should have mentioned the game does scale well, you can play solo or 2-4 players just fine.
28mm Battletech: That warhammer is AWESOME!!! Looks like it's been ripped right from the cover of the old box. How many mech's that scale does your play group have?

Aw. Does this mean no D6G Battletech 25th Anniversary Boxset review?
Well, I.A. . . . funny you should mention that . . .
Also, looks like the Orc Stomp 'fun run' is a little leery of folks just showing up . . . :( They recommended to one listener that he show up with $10 worth of generic tickets if he wanted a chance at a t-shirt or $4 if he wanted to partake of the snacks. I'm thinking if I try to have anything but water after a 5k, even when I'm in good shape, I'll throw up. I'll try to hit the start of the race at 8am Thursday morning with $4 in generic tickets for their coffers and to boost their official numbers, but I'm not going to worry about any 'snacks'

Yeah, he's pretty cool - been around 4 or 5 years now. I think he'd make a great miniature...
Craig - with regard to fitness, welcome to fatherhood... 7 years ago I ran a marathon - best shape of my life. My son turns 7 in a few months...and I've had a hard time staying active since he's been born, and then his sister came along. Can't get to the gym as often, dropped out of my soccer league, yadda yadda. I've recently tried to get back on the fitness bandwagon, so I'll see how I'm doing right along with you...
