Subject: The effects of water on painted miniatures?

So, I've discovered an amazing strip-painting chemical called Dettol Anti-Septic Disenfectant. I've used it loads of times, and it's great. No detail lost WHATSOEVER after leaving painted minis soaking in the stuff for weeks at a time. You only need 8 hours, but life gets busy, you know? Anyway, the only problem I have with it - it stinks. It's not repugnant, but it's that chemical stink that is just off-putting. Usually, the stink leaves the models in a few hours, but these Chaos Warriors I stripped a week ago still stink. I've painted them up, but the stink is still there. So, I've decided I want to try and soak them in water and/or soap in an attempt to free them of the smell. Before I commit some of my painted warriors, has anyone else observed the effects of water on painted miniatures? Or perhaps suggest a tried and proved alternate method of stink removal?
Thanks in advance!

Not to sound like a smartass, but is this a serious question? Are you asking if WATER will hurt models?

Specifically, the paint on models.
It doesn't do a whole lot, although depending on the brand of soap you use the paint may loosen a little. I've tried this, and after bringing it out some of the paint could be scratched off with my fingernail. Maybe 'ard coat them first?

Well if they smell before you painted them, and then you painted them... wouldn't that lock in the smell?
I don't think soap will harm the paint (don't hold me to this!) considering the fact that we use harsh (relatively) chemicals to strip the paint I don't think a little soap and water will harm it.

Aha! This is the bit that I missed the first time around. This answers my question. As for the OP's question, take a test mini and soak it in water for a week. Another thing to try is to clean them to remove the odor before painting them again.

I usally use allcogel ( you know, for cleaning your hands?) but it requiers me to peal the coulor of after soaking, but its realativley quick AND doesent smell at all. No, water woudent hurt you minatures. At least aslong as you dont soak them for a realy long time. Then there mayby will be a noticable difference. Mayby

Alright, I'll drop my warriors in a tub of water for awhile and see what that does. If that fails, I'll add some soap. Automatically Appended Next Post: Ma55ter_fett wrote:Well if they smell before you painted them, and then you painted them... wouldn't that lock in the smell?
I thought about that, and the reason I went ahead and painted them was I was curious if the smell actually went away in a few hours, or if the painting is what 'covered' the smell. Now I know :(

Soak them in an odor neutralizer. Fabreeze would work, oust too.

Slight thread hijack.
I have a fairly dusty land raider with decals and transfers on it.
Would running it under the tap or soacking it in water for a minute or two affect them at all? Some of them are quite old transfers and have flaked in parts.

The most interesting thing here is that a Yank has somehow managed to get hold of Dettol! that's usually a strictly british (and other countries we once owned) product!
Just plain water shouldn't hurt the models too much. I use Dettol for stripping all the time, and the odour usually goes away after a while, if you want to speed up the process I suggest leaving them out in the air with a nice breeze (i.e. outside on a slightly windy day) should accelerate it nicely.
As a side note, I've found the following gets rid of the odour quite effectively:
AFTER you have stripped ALL the paint from the minis, and BEFORE you apply the new paint, put them all in a tub of just water (as in H2O, no soap, no cleaners, nothing) for 24 hours. This leaches the excess dettol out of the plastic, so you don't get that horrible dettol smell.

I use Dettol all the time and have the same problem but I've noticed that after dipping my stripped figures in acetone for an hour or so (to get rid of superglue) and then running cold water over them the smell disappears.

I had to get it off Amazon, it was quite an ordeal!
I did leave them out and about for an entire week, and I think I know why these models in particular have not been de-stinkified. All the paint had been stripped, but the black primer/undercoat was still there, although no longer pure black, more of a dark grey/brown. So, I think that's whats up, the primer is holding onto the chemical. Now, to fix the problem, I am just dunking them in water before I go to work today, because there are still some areas that did not recieve paint (like the chest plates that hide behind the shield, and a large portion of his back covered by a cloak). So, I'll let you know what happens! I'm scared!
