Death-Dealing Devastator

Hi All,
A friend of mine is starting his first 40K army and has chosen Blood Angels. He wants to do a list of mostly Jump packs, however he really wants to use death Company in a LRC as the centerpiece to his force (so he can point them in the right direction) My question is, can a LRC full of DC work in a list of mostly jump troops? I was considering adding 2 Preds for long range support, and to present more armoured targets than just the poor LRC. Or 2 vindicators to advance with the LRC. Thoughts? Would he be better off to just give the DC jump packs and pray they don't chase something stupid?

Thanks!

My opinion is DC always need a ride. The JP's are expensive, and you can't control them. Personally I like to give them a Storm Raven, but if it is the only AV in your list, you need to either go first, or reserve it. Also if you don't have a Dread of some sort you are wasting a benefit.

On Dakka he was Eldanar. In our area, he was Lee. R.I.P., Lee Guthrie.

You could make a LR work by wrapping it with assault marines so that melta can't get as close. Use LOS blocking terrain, smoke launchers, and a libby with shield to help keep it alive. That said LR's work best in full mech lists. I second the SR idea with a dread.

If you are going all JP, then I personally don't condone vehicles.

Having said that, DC are great and don't let ANY one tell you differently. They are pricey, however, and the JP's make them even more so.

If you want them in a DoA list then you are going to want to control that rage until you want to let them loose. The SR would be a great addition to the JP army if held in reserve.

My thoughts.

My sense is that a Stormraven is the ideal ride for a Death Company. Since Stormravens really need to be in pairs or triplets, that implies building a Stormraven list, which isn't for everyone.

I think a Land Raider is the only other viable ride, so it might be ok in a mech list. In a JP list, it's a bad idea. It's already a bad idea to mix Jump Infantry and mech, especially if you're a new player, and DC aren't the most practical unit around in most circumstances.

If he really wants to have them, a Land Raider (any kind, really) in a mech list is probably the best way to do it.

Here's what I'm thinking:

HQ: Librarian with Shield and Unleash Rage 100 (goes with DC in LRC)
TR: 10 Death Company Marines, 2 Power Fists, Land Raider Crusader with Multi-melta and Extra Armor 515
TR: 5 Assault Marines, Meltagun, Las/Plas Razorback 165
TR: 5 Assault Marines, Flamer, Las/Plas Razorback 160
TR: 5 Assault Marines, Flamer, Las/Plas Razorback 160
FA: Baal Predator 115
FA: Baal Predator 115
FA: Baal Predator 115
HS: Auto/Lascannon Predator 135

Thanks for the comments. That looks like a great list, however he really doesn't want to do Mech, that is the reason he chose Blood angels over Chaos marines....

Well, here's an all infantry list then:

HQ: Librarian with Jump Pack, Shield of Sanguinius, Unleash Rage 125
HQ: Honor Guard with Jump Packs, 4 Flamers 185
EL: Sanguinary Priest with Jump Pack 75
TR: 10 Assault Marines with 2 Meltaguns, Power Fist 235
TR: 10 Assault Marines with 2 Meltaguns, Power Fist 235
TR: 10 Assault Marines with 2 Meltaguns, Power Fist 235
TR: 10 Assault Marines with 2 Meltaguns, Power Fist 235
FA: 5 Vanguard Veterans with Jump Packs, Power Fist Sergeant 175
FA: 5 Vanguard Veterans with Jump Packs, Power Fist Sergeant 175
FA: 5 Vanguard Veterans with Jump Packs, Power Fist Sergeant 175

Total: 1850

If he really needs to take a Death Company, he can drop an Assault Squad to take 6 DC Marines with Jump Packs and a Power Fist for the same price. They will chase stupid stuff against a smart opponent, though.
