Banewolves are good MEQ killers, but you also need to remember they have their weaknesses, namely extremely short range.

However, they do have the advantage of being faster than their other Hellhound rivals thanks to their gun having a strength of 1, meaning they can go 12" a turn, and still fire their main gun, and their hull weapon.

As such, I often use Banewolves as countercharge (nothing screws up a charge of Blood Claws like a Banewolf smashing into them!), or as the outflankers when I use Creed. Once again, nothing freaks out Devastators and Long Fangs more than a Banewolf squadron rushing them from the side. Give them a multimelta as a hull weapon, and you'll also learn that most tanks don't like taking strength 8 shots up their tailpipes either.

But, never, EVER use a Banewolf as a frontal assault unit. Their short range and thin~ish armor will doom them.

I really, really, want to like Banewolves, but their mega short range virtually guarantees they will be immediately destroyed... if they could project, just 12" like the regular Hellhound, they would be golden... so close... and yet so far.

It's my experience that people try to use their Banewolves as Hellhounds that can kill Marines, and if you use a Banewolf like a Hellhound it's going to die.

The trick is to try to use the Banewolf as something completely different.

I use mine for three things.

1) Counter charge. If you've got Marines rushing towards you to engage in CC, a Banewolf shot to the face is going to hurt. It may even weaken them enough for subsequent lasfire and bayonets to finish them off.

2) Outflanking. With Creed, a Banewolf squadron can get into the enemy's rear area and just raise hell. Multimelta shots into the rear of tanks, Chem cannons into heavy weapons toting infantry, etc, etc.

3) Distraction. Marine players are going to freak, and try to kill the Banewolf before it can kill their Marines. Each turn their AT fire is going into the Banewolf is one turn when it's not going into the Chimeras, Lemans or arty.

No, they're on a Chimera Chassis and have less armour then a Baal. They're similar, but not so much.

I personally find a Hellhound with Multi-melta a far more versatile (and slightly more expensive) tank, more suited for TAC lists. Granted, if your meta is 95% MEQ, by all means, take the Banewolf, but I think the Hellhound is a better choice overall on the same chassis.

Though a Banewolf w/Heavy flamer would be hilariously fun.
