Hello everyone.

So while this may be obvious to some people, it is not obvious to me.

Do the differences in Space Marines models signify certain things? IE: Skull on the side of the bolter, or Wing thing on side of bolter. Little shield looking things on the sides of the helmets vs not.

I really do not know much about space marines in general, but I have seen a LOT of variety in backpack design, bolter designs, helmet designs.

Thinking to put a few together out of the random bits I have, but wanted to check if those variances in designs meant anything about subfactions.

Someone, anyone? The internet sucks on a subject like this.

No, that stuff is pretty much all just to keep things looking interesting. The only thing is the ones with chains on them (in the Black Templars box) tend to signify Black Templars, just as the ones with Wolves on them (from the Space Wolves boxes) signify Space Wolves. Regular Space Marine boxes and what have you, regardless of what doodads are on their guns or armor, are just bog standard and you have nothing to worry about.

ok cool, so I can just mix and match them up and it will all work. That is what I needed to know.

A little skull on the forehead of the helmet is supposed to signify that the bearer has earned the right to be a sergeant. He may not be one, it just means he has earned the right to be. Most of the other stuff is decoration or differences in the model of armor/bolter. The decorative stuff can freely be mixed and matched though. Most Space Marines venerate their wargear and hand it down throughout the years, so that most squads are not uniform.
