Subject: IC attached to wiped out squad in assault, does IC take Ld test since he is now alone with modifier?

So this came up last night, a banshee troupe with Yriel decided it would be a great idea to charge Draigo's squad through a tiny little area where they could barely fit.
First combat nothing really happened since barely any of them could get to me, and barely any of my guys could get to them. Yriel directed his attacks onto my Daemonhammer carrier and he got wiped out, but that was it. I failed Ld and was swept into, but obviously ATSKNF prevented me from actually losing anyone.
Second combat Draigo was in range, as well as the rest of the squad, who then proceeded to lay waste to the entire squad of 10 banshees and take no wounds in return, so the combat resolution would be taken at -10ld, which I assume would apply to Yriel. We decided he should count as one of the squad still and take the Ld based on their losses. He obviously failed because rolling snake eyes isn't easy, and fell back, where we then said he could regroup with himself, since he is an IC?
Is that the correct way to handle this? I couldn't find it in the BRB.
Of course, I mis-managed my consolidation move for my lib and he got lit up by brightlances on my opponents turn, heh.

I would agree that you did the right thing. While Yriel was ("was" being the operative word in this case) a part of the squad of Howling Banshees, he would regardless still test on his Ld score since he was the only other unit in CC with your squad.
The only other time where this situation would matter is if there were multiple units of your opponents in this assault as well. In this case, you take the OVERALL differences between all units involved in CC before deciding who takes which Leadership test.
So for instance:
Your Group A is in CC with your opponent's Group B and C.
Group A inflicts 4 wounds
Group B inflicts 2 wounds
Group C inflicts 2 wounds
In this case, it would be a tied combat, and no groups would have to test, since the outcome in this case is a 4 to 4 tie. Likewise, let's say Group C only inflicts 1 wound. Group A would then win CC, and Group B and C would have to test with a -1 penalty to their Ld score, since the difference of CC is 4 to 3.
It's also worth noting that if a model is killed by the "Instant Death" effect, however many wounds that model had before it died is effectively how many wounds that were inflicted, and thus would be added to the difference when resolving CC.
Hope that helps!

Durng the combat he is still part of the unit that lost, meaning he takes the test at whatever negative his unit lost by, as you dont check "unit allegiance" until your movement phase.
When you get to his movement phase he is no longer part of a unit (you cant measure to them!) and so he can regroup.

Assault result goes by side, not by unit. Every unit on the losing side shares the same assault result and has to test morale or suffer no retreat based on that result. Yriel's on a side that lost by 10. You resolved it correctly. All that the survival of his unit would do is cause the surviving members of his unit to share the result of his morale test - ICs go back to being part of their units for morale purposes even though they are otherwise treated as separate units in combat.

Could have been much worse for Yriel. If even one member of the squad had survived, then he would have been falling back with a squad below 50% that he cannot leave, and never be able to attempt to rally.

No; as he is still part of the unit until his next movement phase(possibly "the" next movement phase, but that is because the unit will be gone); he is still required to remain in coherency during "pile in " moves if the unit is still alive.
The IC rules are very clear, there is no joining nor leaving units after the movement phase.

Couldn't he just leave the squad during the movement phase?

Why does a character explicitly have to leave a unit no longer in existence? How is a character that is on the board on it's own still joined to a dire avenger unit? Can someone quote the corresponding rule?

Jidmah, I'm not sure if anyone is making a case that he is joined to a unit that doesn't exist.
His side of the combat lost. It doesn't matter if he was part of a unit (that is now dead) or if he and another unit assaulted separately. He still takes a -10 test.
In the next movement phase, he is not joined to any unit, so tests on his own. An argument could be made by the real savvy rules lawyer that he isn't "unjoined" to a unit until the end of the phase when you check coherency, in which case he is joined to a unit below half strength and wouldn't be able to rally that movement phase, but nobody is making that claim, and I have never heard of anyone making that claim another time.

That was my point, I guess I misread don_mondos post in claiming exactly this. Of course he would have to take the corresponding moral check, whether his unit gets shout out from under him or killed in close combat.

You consolidate combat together. Yriel was part of the squad and takes the test.
Yriel can regroup if theres no one within 6"

Yeah, he was talking about having a Howling Banshee survive (making a unit of 1 out of 10), so Yriel would be stuck with a squad that would never be able to rally.
I've had this happen before. It was the Baron with a single Hellion, who had two pain tokens and shot Logan to death to become Fearless and auto-rally the next turn.
