Do pistols use the strength value of their profile when used as a close combat weapon, or do they use the strength of the model? This is about the Infernus Pistol in particular.

The strength of the model. In 5th edition you punch people with your pistol if they get too close

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

The pistol's profile is only used for shooting. In close combat, it's just a close combat weapon, so hits with the model's Strength.

As above, you dont shoot it in CC, you just smash them over the head with it

I like the idea of pistols with bayonets.

In fact, I'd prefer any gun I would use to have a bayonet. I think CoD:World at War had the shotgun with a bayonet.

Never know when you'll have to stab something!

Supposedly in 6th, you'll have the option of using a pistol's Strength instead of the model's strength in CC.

GENERATION 8: The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your sig and add 1 to the number after generation. Consider it a social experiment.

That'll get ugly fast..

What races have a pistol with S better than their racial stat?

Orks- sluggas are S 4
Dark Eldar have blasters at S 8
IOM have plasma pistols, infernus pistols, bolt pistols (for guard)

Definitely interesting possibility....

I think it might only be for the 'squad leader' model that each unit would have?

In any case, it'd be interesting either way. For Orks, it would be one more reason to take Sluggaboyz over Shootaboyz. Would the extra strength help them to even the score over a Shoota barrage?

For the very reason that you actually smack the enemy with your pistol I gave my succubus a normal wych hand with a punchblade kind of knife and fitted a splinter pistol on the wrist. A wrist mounted splinter pistol and a blade in one hand.

I shall rule the world someday utilizing my cuteness. And I already have one minion to help me do it!

people use Shoota Boys? I thought 90% or more Orks used Sluggas and Choppas.

Boyz already are S4 on the charge, this would most likely only help them when charged or after first round of combat.

The only real reasons to use Sluggaboyz is their price due to AOBR and putting them in transports. Shootaboyz are superior for foot slogging units.

now the main reason people use Slugga Boys is to put them inside transports? I must know nothing on how to make a good Ork army.

The difference is existent and very small. But you are, in fact, better off using shootas than sluggas, unless getting charged out of transports is part of your strategy.

It's the way it used to be, way back in 2nd edition, so it wouldn't be a surprising change.

That would be very interesting. That would make the cheaper plasma pistol that strikes at ini a normality with guard over the S6 I1 power fist, making guard blobs more interesting and devastating.

I know it's OT, but to clarify the 6th edition pistol rumours:

The way I understand it, a model will be able to use the pistol's strength in combat, and will get to make all of their attacks on the charge, but in subsequent rounds will only be able to make one attack with it (without bonuses for extra CCWs etc). AP1-2 weapons will count as Rending (2), and Gets Hot will still apply.

I don't know if you'll be able to use other weapons in addition to this (like power weapons), or if it's like using a different special close combat weapon, though. But it does make things like plasma pistols more interesting for assault units.

ok so similar to using grenades or melta bombs when attacking a tank. You sacrifice the extra attacks for the ability to shoot a higher strength pistol. sounds interesting.
