Nice article(s)
I kinda feel you underestimate scourges slightly, they are awesome at taking down monstrous creatures......2 guys with splinter cannons can take down a Wraithlord in 1 turn easy enough....personally i like taking some scourges with splinter cannons as they are at least assault 4 + their shardcarbines
also hellions aren't that bad....sure they aren't the best, they are basically wyches without the dodge save, but have 1 extra strength instead and move 12", but yes to make them effective you really have to take the baron AND duke Sliscus, both of which are actually rather cheap and both have shadowfields so can last pretty long
.....by taking Sliscus you can get a better chance of them getting 1 of 2 optimal drug options(+1 s/PT), then another 2 which are decent(+1a/re-roll wound), the 3d6" run can also help make them incredible fast....with 12" move, a practically guaranteed 4-6" run and a 6" assault, how is that slower than normal wyches in raiders? sure if you think of them as fast attack, but that's why you take the baron to make them troops
....with them when they get the +1 s from combat drugs thats s5 (6 if they have FC) with baron attached who then gives them stealth, + he has s6 on the charge (7 if he has FC).....
....granted too actually make good use of them they should probably come out of a webway portal......so its true, they are kinda crappy....UNLESS you build your army around them, ive had them tear apart a 10man squad of wraithguard......mostly by making good use of hit and run.....
Lastly, grotesques with Urien attached and paying the 5pts to make them s6 base works very well for me, it gives you a unit that is all t5 with 3 wounds, because of wound allo you can just put the first couple on urien as he auto regens, not too mention the squad starting out with at least 3 pain tokens, giving them s7 i5 on the charge...then you give the aberration a scissorhand to give him 4attacks base + 1 for scissorhand, + 1 for additional ccw (cause it doesnt replace his current one, it just adds another weapon) + 1 for charge to get a squad of s7 i5 guys with 4 attacks each and a aberration with 7attacks that wound on 3+ with re-rolls cause of s>t....works really well if you have em come out a webway portal as well, or maybe with the new FW tantalus and it supposedly having 16 TC you could stick 7+Urien for an uber unit of killiness...especially combined with the super s7ap2 bladevane that the tantalus has.....
ohhh and also as far as some of your wargear stuff goes, the orb of despair, is actually one of the pieces of wargear that makes a haem ancient useful due to its bs5, meaning less chance of scatter...and also you got to remember that its s10 so the WORST you will need is 4+ and its ap1 blast so its actually rather nasty, just a pity its only 1shot
lastly, i did a beastmaster conversion ages ago, using the old beastmaster model stuck onto a new board with agonizer......hard to get good pictures due to him only being primed at the moment, but any way.

I agree that S.Cannons are awesome, I do think there are better and more affordable ways to get them into the army if I want to use them. Let's just consider;
5 Scourges, 2 S. Cannons - 130 points.
Generate 8 S. Cannon shots and 6 Shardcarbine shots after moving 12"
3 Trueborn, 2 S.Cannons, Venom w. Additional S.Cannon
Generates 12 S.Cannon shots after moving 12"
Generates an additional 8 S.Cannon and 2 S.Rifle shots after moving 6"
Invulnerable save and is a vehicle.
Costs less.
I do think Scourges have possibilities within certain lists, but being able to serve as ways to get S.Cannons on the field isn't one of them. I'm more enamored of them being able to get Haywire Blasters onto the field, because there is very little competition for that in the Dex, so Scourges are ver good at that without question. They're also probably okay as Heat Lance platforms as well. Still, field them, try them out, I don't think they're bad, they're just not as good as one would hope.
Krushhk wrote:also hellions aren't that bad....sure they aren't the best
That's the whole debate right there, right?
In all honesty, you're right, if you field them as you discuss they'll probably do okay...you're paying over 200 points to make them okay though... I've also seen some very neat lists that are built around giving two pain tokens and the Baron to Hellions right away, giving you a FC Str 5 Jump infantry with FNP. Yeah, they're "good" at that stage...but it took around 200 points of support to get them there. Is that really value? I personally don't think so.
Krushhk wrote:Lastly, grotesques with Urien attached and paying the 5pts to make them s6 base works very well for me
I actually like Grot Bombs, though I think it works fine without Urien. Even a regular Haem joined with Grots will make them FC at Str 6 (Urien will get them at Str 7) and, versus pretty much any infantry or vehicle you want to try to bust up, that Str 6 will do you just as well, at a cost saving of over 100 points by taking a regular Haem as opposed to Urien (also, with a Liquifier and V.Blade that regular Haem is 100 points cheaper and will inflict more wounds than Urien) So, I like the Grot bomb build, I'm just not sold on Urien as the best combo with it.

Dude! That is awesome! When you get him painted I totally want you to post a pic so I can include it in the article, that thing rocks!

That is true about the trueborn being able to do splinter better, but then again dont you really want to make better use of your trueborn by giving them blasters instead?
And seeing as scourges are fast attack you dont have to worry about stealing away from your elites just to add some extra AI, Scourges are also 1 of 2 entries in the dex that have grenades apart from special characters so if the need to assualt they can do so without having to worry about cover(not that you want them too assault anyway, it really depends on what your versing....cause warriors can do surprisingly well in combat against some things, even had a squad beat down some genestealers.....), the whole squad has ghostplate armour so they can survive better then trueborn in the open....
The main thing about them though for me is that they can get their points back 1st turn, then if they survive the next turn as they are jump infantry they can then move near some more stuff to potentially get their points back again... It really depends on how big a game your playing though and who your playing against, but usually i use trueborn for AT and Scourges for AI
Well, if you DO build your list towards making hellions good they can be really nasty, almost a black sheep kinda thing, in that if you know what your doing, the enemy really wont know what hit them, as they will most likely be distracted by everything else which they think is gonna hurt more.....I really only play one squad of 8guys attached to baron out of a webway portal, they do really well against hordes....baron is also fairly cheap considering he is s6 so he can actually hurt vehicles whereas archons have to have a blast pistol to be able to hurt vehicles (or husk blade + soultrap), and i really like the way he looks, been working on a conversion for him for ages, had it finished at one point but didnt like it so i stripped him and started over, almost done converting him again now though......i also do like the idea of sticking the baron with beasts.....
Oh, and as far as beasts go, the clawed fiend is good, but i'd only ever take 1 in a squad like you said, although.....a full squad of 5 'might' be alright, except for the points, although considering that they are basically grotesques with 1 extra wound, 1 extra initiative, 1 extra attack, 2 extra ld(5 woohoo) but no pfp or fnp, for the 5 points more, although i do remember reading that as the BM still has pfp they can benefit from the fearless as long as he is alive, which i guess isnt too bad considering you kinda want them to get hurt
I have also thought about using grotesques and attaching a IC with them just so that they can get close enough to some enemies and separating him from the squad, and then hoping that i roll a 1 on their beserk rampage roll.....even if just for fun.....but as i mostly play against MC heavy nids or iyandan (30 wraithguard and 3 wrailords) i like my s7 on the charge, even if its not pw attacks, its nice to know that i can hurt them on 3s or even 2s, and then use uriens clone field to stop any of his successful hits, which after the grotesques have attacked there will probably only be 2 or 3 guys left anyway, meaning they wont really get to attack me back......just sad that the last game i used him i got a 1 for the strength of his casket of flensing......
lastly, it will probably be a LONG while before the beast master gets painted....trying to get all my new models painted first.....and considering i have a little over 6k dark eldar, with only 10warriors, 2 raiders(old), 1 dais(old), 1 archon(new) and 7grotesques(converted rat ogres see here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/351317.page for the unpainted versions, they still have a little highlighting to do before they are finished) actually finished....its a long way to go before i get to my old stuff......XD

As I understand it, the secret is in how you deploy the Mandrakes - I'm still amazed how devastating they are in that particular configuration.

I also agree that scourges are ranked low. Now granted I do fill up my troops, elites, and HS, and then go to FA, but when I get there I go to scourges. Honestly if you pregame declare to DS scourges then get a portal down (you only need 1) you can run them out of it and heat lance something nasty to death and their points are made up. I wouldn't use them to kill infantry as venoms do way better. Even DL aren't horrible on them. Yeah you can't move and shoot but in games over 2K where you need to get every lance possible they are the only fast attack slot that can take Dark Lances. Basically I turn them into a more expensive if better armored DL sniper squad (that takes me back). The advantage is that if you are about to get overrun by something outflanking say some wolf scouts you can easily fly away maybe toss some shard carbine shots at them while something like some wracks chem 'em up. Then you can go back to DL things. Basically I'll run 3 squads of 5. 2 with heat lances using a portal and 1 with DL sniping squads.
They are also one of the other places that can get haywire blasters, which I think we can all agree are nice! Then there are blasters too for the more conservative players. So all in all I think they are right up there with beasts. Of course its just my two cents.

Just as a note, you can't declare them DS and then come out of a portal. You're either DS or coming on from a board edge.

No actually you can. I don't have my book on me so I can't give a pg number, but I believe it is under the WWP entry under wargear. I remember checking before 'ard boyz this year (both prelims and semis) that they can come on through the portal treating it as a table edge regardless of how you declared them to come in from reserve.
