With 24 inch range and needing to roll to hit this gun is pretty much only useful against one kind of target : small, heavily armored units. Mostly knights. You get one chance to shoot them, at long range, before they charge you. For everything else, mortars and canons are better.

At BS 2 on average you need the following to kill a single 2+ save t3 knight(heavy armor, shield, barded mount) : 2/3 chance to fail a save., 5/6 chance to wound, 1/3 chance to hit, or about 6 shots. This assumes no cover at all, or magic.

The maths is kind of complicated but...the maximum damage you can do is 30 shots, at bs 2, killing 5.56 t3 2+ save knights, but thats only a 0.5% chance of happening. Meanwhile theres a 1/6 chance of misfiring on the first shot.

It doenst look too good really. If its range was boosted to 36 inches and it could shoot at short range without getting charged, then maybe...

It's target isn't only cavalry, it's any high toughness, heavily armoured enemy. Chaos knights, ogres, longbeards and other troops that rely on being able to shrug of most of the ranged hits they suffer make great targets for volley guns.

I don't think it needs a greater range, as a 36" range would make it feel like the quality, accurate weapon that it is not. It may make it balanced, but it will feel wrong on the field.

But I do agree that at present while it can be very devestating there's too much chance of it contributing little to a game, and not enough potential devestation to justify spending so many points. I think it most likely needs a substantial points reduction, which when coupled with the inevitable increase in the cost of mortars will make things work about right.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.
