I haven't played a game of WHFB since 6th edition, so I know what I'm about to type will be as flawed as they come, so fire away. I picked up some dwarves in an auction and am going to play a couple 1k point games this week to get a feel for the rules. This is a shooty list that will depend on weakening my opponent before they can get off a charge on me.
Master Engineer w/handgun, joined to an organ gun with rune of reloading, rune of penetrating, and rune of burning
2 units of 16 Thunderers with shields
3 Cannons
1 Organ Gun
That is 990 points. I'm not really sure what to do with the other 10 points.
I'm hoping that the cannons, thunderers, and organ gun can put a enough of a hurt on my opponet before he crashes into my thunderers. So, what should I expect? Am I going to get completely hosed? Or will my heavy shooting have a chance to do enough damage for me to win? Should I trade out one unit of thunderers for a unit of warriors?

Dont you need at least 3 units excluding warmachines?
I would drop the organ gun and 1 or 2 of the canons. Get a grudgethrower at least. Drop the master engineer and get at least one infantry block with great weapons.

I agree. Your list I think is illegal. Get a grudgethrower with rune of accuracy and some infantry to mop up whats left after shooting. You need 3 non warmachine units.

I think it's just 3 units unless it's in the 8th edition general FAQ I am not seeing the exception to warmachines.
Here is the thing an ME does not do anything for a cannon. In 8th edition all cannons were buffed to D6 wounds. They do a lot of a grudge thrower with Rune of Accuracy and Rune of Penetrating. You cannot give engineering runes to engineers, Engineering runes go on the cannons and grudge throwers specifically, they cannot go on Organ Guns, the technology is too new they have not found a way to do it yet. If you want a brutal gunline at 1k go for something similar but like this:
Master Engineer, Brace of Pistols 80 (Or Rune of Stone, Great Weapon for 79 pts)
14 Thunderers, Shields, Musician 215
14 Thunderers, Shields, Musician 215
Grudge Thrower, Rune of Accuracy, Rune of Penetrating 130
Grudge Thrower, Rune of Accuracy, Rune of Burning 110
Cannon, Rune of Forging, Rune of Burning 130
Organ Gun 120
1k on the nose.
Put the ME within 3 inches of at least the 2 grudge throwers so they can benefit from a re-roll on the artillery dice.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Thanks for the list help Hargus56. I'll have to give it a try. I don't have any grudge thrower models, but I'm sure my friend won't mind me proxying cannons for them.
As far as the number of units, at 1k points all that is required is 2+ core, 0-3 special, and 0-1 rare, so I think I'm good in that regard.
So, I'm going to play one game with the list you have drawn up for me Hargus56, and another game with a unit of warriors with great weapons standing in for one of the thunderer units.

No problem and ignore what you are reading on pages 48-49 of the dwarf book, in 8th edition those force organization charts have been thrown out. It's now up to 25% lords, 25% heroes, at least 25% core, up to 50% special and up to 25% rare with only 3 duplicates of any 1 unit for special and 2 for rares.

Your friend is unlikely to be impressed that you are taking 4 warmachines and 2 ranged infantry in a 1000pts game, with absolutely no melee at all.

Played twice tonight. The games went okay. I lost both but learned a lot about the game mechanics in the process. I think I will drop two warmachines and take another block of infantry, probably great weapon warriors.
I'm going to play a 3k point game tomorrow night using my 40k demon army. I picked up the daemons of chaos army book tonight and am going to give them a go.
