I'm in the market for a case, and I like the Battlefoam cases a lot. I'm not looking for alternatives, so please don't swamp the thread with 'buy X's cases instead'.

Does anyone have a Pack 1520XL? I'm looking for something to store my Tyranids and Vampire Counts, so I'm going to need something pretty big, storing about 300 infantry sized models and various larger models between the two armies.

I have the older original 1520 and as a case its incredible, I can get two full tournament level armies into it, one for Fantasy and one for 40k. It's slightly larger than the new one (but is in two compartments rather than one, the new one is far bigger if you include a PACK Plus extension) but is missing the carrying handle/roller system and isn't made with the kevlar mesh material (not that I've had any issues with durability). The wheels alone make the newer 1520XL better imo, my only complaint with the 1520 is that it clearly wasn't designed to be carried as a backpack (which is fine really because most of the time you are just carrying it back and forth from a car which you use the top handle for) and the edge of the bottom/floor panel of the case digs into my back pretty badly if I have to walk a few hundred meters home from the bus stop.

The 1520 should fit both those armies with room to spare. Also makes a nice end table for books and such while your playing. Have you checked the pre cut trays the offer yet?

I'm too sexy for a sig.

I was mostly considering their pluck foam trays. I like the idea of their precut trays, but some of them sit models in positions I don't want (lik their precut zoanthrope trays that stand them up, while I want my zoanthropes lying down).

Just a couple of things about battlefoam in general.

1 - Even if your armies don't fit into the 1520 you have alot of expansion options that just zip onto the top of bag. You can stack as many P.A.C.K Plus as you want or you can even add a 720.

2 - I would seriously suggest you go with custom cut foam, even if you have to send them traces. You will fit much more in custom cut then you will in plick foam.

3 - Battlefoam is changeing the material that there cases are made out of, its now going to be Kevlar instead of Nylon. I have one of the new P.A.C.K Airs and I have to say the new material is worth the wait.

I have the Old style 1520 and 2 Pack maxes.
Those would be as large as you can get.

The first pack max holds: A FW Thunderhawk, 4 LR, 4 Rhinos, 6 dreads, and 168 Termies ( yeah it's a death wing army)

The second pack max holds the following army to give you a idea on size wise:
6 Valks with wings on, 3 Hydras, 3 Manticores, 30 HW teams ( more if some of my teams were not standing up) 4 standard BF troop trays ( two trays hold 72, a piece, the other two have some odd cut outs for standard bearers)

THe 1520 I can't comment on , since mine has a Reaver and 2 IG super heavies in it in a total of 3 trays... so they are all really big cases.

The pack maxes weigh a ton when fully loaded though, with the extra side and bottom reinforcement.

I have the 1520XL that you specify, and it holds my 2k point Guard horde army with room to spare (I have a completely empty infantry tray, along with 2 more vehicle trays to hold 5 Leman Russ tanks, and 6 Chimera transports.. For me, it is a very nice case, well balanced, though everything is a VERY tight fit (as in how the trays fit into the case as a whole), which means that the models really dont move very much during any movements. The case is well balanced, and even with its size, is not too difficult or awkward to carry, and has the wheels and handle of your typical carry-on luggage.

To give you an idea of how much I personally like this case, Im thinking of, when i get back to the states, and assuming the program is still going on, sending BF my sabol case on that trade in deal... and am for sure buying some form of battlefoam case for my Ogres and Dark Elf fantasy armies.

Not sure if I'll go the custom tray route, but I'm thinking of grabbing pre cut trays now. I'll probably need 5 pre cut infantry trays, a VC cavalry tray and a Tryanid Carnifex/Zoanthrope tray to start with.

Annoyingly, that's the same price in foam trays as the empty 1520XL. However, it's barely breached 50% of the space in that case, which means there's plenty of room for expanding without even needing a pack max on top. I like that a lot.

Battlefoam isn't cheap, but in my opionon it is the best out there, but you need to be willing to pay more for a far supporior product.

One more recommendation that I would make is to get enough foam to completly fill the case as leaving room for trays to move around kind of defeats the purpose.

The problem with filling the case is I have no idea how I'm going to expand in the future. What I might do is get a large block of foam from a hardware store to fill the gap, and keep cutting it down as I add more trays. I'm certainly not going to buy another $150au worth of foam trays that I may end up not needing as I expand my armies a different direction.

I will say this - Battlefoam are awesome for having stenciled custom trays. That means I'll be able to fit some of the odder shaped and sized models I have in there. I'll be considering a custom tray for my Heirophant if they do them that size, and definitely one for when I grab some other large Forgeworld models.

You can fill the bag with pluck foam, thats what I usually do, I keep a few extra 1 inch trays around to use as spacers.

If your talking about the really really large FW models your going to want to go with a P.A.C.K Max.

Spoke to the owner of my FLGS, and he told me to tell him what trays I want and what pack, and he'll work out a better price for me, which is awesome. I'll probably half fill it, and go to a hardware store and get a large chunk of foam cut to fit the gap, then cut it down as I put more trays in. Pluck foam is tempting, but I don't want to do it for so many models.

And yeah, I was going to grab a pack max for my bigger stuff and have the foam custom cut.

I'll hijack this thread as my question also is about battlefoam.

I'm just about to order a custom tray and want to add a hole for my wraithlord.

Which hole is for the wraithlord? (Round X inch)

(I would ask Battlefoam directly but htey suck at answering emails fast).
