I enjoy open-world RPGs along the lines of Morrowind. I remember spending hours with that game. It had a great story and a great, expansive, immersive world. I see this when I read reviews and watch videos of the Witcher 2. Is this a correct read? Tell me your opinions.

I have started playing the game. I just actually completed the first game not to long ago, which you can transfer the saved game over to the next one. I have no idea if it modifies the game story based on what happend in the last one but it does gives you a few starting items from the original that helps.
So far, its great. Visuals, as with most newer games, are great. The combat is a bit more open than the original game, you start with all the Signs, unlike the original, and there is still a character development system. Sense there is a big difference between the graphic engines between the two games, all the original characters that continued into the 2nd game look a lot different. I did not reconize Triss Merigold the first time I saw her in the 2nd game as she looked a bit older in the original but looks incrediblely young in the 2nd (which she was suppose to be extremely young).
I say give it a try, but the 2nd game might feel a bit wierd as to why you are working with who you are working for, why you consider some of the characters as friends and lovers, and who some of the factions are if you never played the first game.

I imagine I can get a nice overview from a wiki or some-such. If you had to compare it to another game from a different studio which would you choose?

It is brilliant, though don't go in expecting an open-ended game along the lines of Morrowind. If you do that, you will be disappointed. It is slightly open-ended in the way and order you can approach things, and you have the freedom to shape the storyline in some profound ways with the choices you can make, but the maps are much more confined and there just aren't quite as many random events or miscellaneous things to occupy yourself with as an Elder Scrolls Game. In terms of the breadth of the game world, expect something more along the lines of Fable. That said, this should not deter you from picking up The Witcher 2. The script and dialogue is awesome, there are somewhere around 12 different endings, the game is extremely difficult and rewarding, and the atmosphere is incredible. The attention to detail in this game is quite unlike anything you've ever seen. One of the best action RPGs I've ever played, no question about it. It's difficult to compare it to just one game. I'd compare it to Demon's Souls for the sheer difficulty and amazing handcrafted world and atmosphere, Mass Effect or Dragon Age for the amount and quality of the dialogue (though the choices within this dialogue are much more drastic), Monster Hunter for the crafting and alchemy system, and Fable for the design of the maps and quests (though don't get me wrong, The Witcher 2 is much more mature and violent than Fable could ever dream of being).

Demon's Souls for the difficulty? I'm in for a real treat then. I picked it up on steam cuz it was on sale, so as soon as it downloads I'll be hopping into it!

Anything that has Demon Souls for difficulty, Monster Hunter for crafting and a good RPG feel to it has got my bet. Imma go pick up a copy too.

I’ve really wanted to try it out but my computer is subpar, so no dice.
I hear the UK version has some explicit scenes that were cut from the American version. Not that I would play it just for the explicit scenes…. >.>

Suuuuure. Well as I said, I got it from steam. Sadly my computer is making it near unplayable. I just can't put up with 14 minute load times only to get laggy gameplay. At least I have it though so when I do upgrade computers it will be there waiting for me.

Sucks man. I got a new laptop about 4 months ago. i3 intel core with Radeon Premium Graphics, supports DX11.
The review I read on a gaming site a while ago had a guy playing it with DX9 and spazzing out at the graphics, so it better be good. Getting it this weekend, I'll post details after a run through.

I probably should've made clear that The Witcher 2 has very steep system requirements; sorry.
It is definitely one of the best-looking games I've ever seen, though (even on low settings). I'll be amazed if they can manage to port it over to the consoles. It was definitely built around the capability of current-gen PCs.

I'm thinking of getting this...what RPG is most closely comparable to? I've seen many comparisons to Dragon Age 2, which is definitely a plus because I absolutely adored that game.

I didn't get far at all, but Dragon Age 2 as far as atmosphere and story setup sounds about right from what I did see.
And I heard from a reliable source (cannot remember specifically) that the Witcher will be coming to consoles later this year (at best).

Well, I bought it, and I have to say, I am loving it. What an excellent story.
I feel like I am missing out for not playing the first Witcher, however. I realize the Prologue filled me in on Foltest and such, but did I miss anything other than that?
I just finished the first Chapter, I chose to side with the One-Eyed Elf and Saskia, just because it felt right.
