Hi : )

i hope this is the correct Board :/

Im mastering a Deathwatch (Roleplay) game, and the group is almost at the end. Now, i have a Titan there that will activate its Voidshields. My question is: will this, like, cut through stuff thats in "its way"? Or is the shield pushing out from the Titan when created? Or can i just say "because im the GM, that why!" xD

cheers : )

When it's activated it will be instantly in place. Anything standing where the edge of the shield will be... well they will be cut half.

the void shield won't cut them in 1/2, it will transport them into the Warp. which is infinitly worse.

it says it isn't clear exactly how they work, but it is generally agreed the Warp Transport method is the real deal.

If thats not true then, if anything, it wouldn't cut you in 1/2 but you would just be stuck good.

Hmmm...
Guns of Tanith mentions that you get chopped in two if you're standing in the way of the shield when it activates.
That Colonel fellow got gotted by it.

Yeah this is what i was thinking of as well, its an energy field, why would it transport you to the Warp?

EDIT:
I see why it would transport a bullet to the Warp maybe, but thats hitting the leading edge of the Shield, being inside the field when the 'event horizon' (cant think of a better way to describe it sorry) would cut you in half.

there is also mention in First and Only of tanks getting chopped in two by force fields. Personally I perfer the idea of it being an actual peice of science tech rather than some mystical warp thing. Too much stuff seems to get chucked into the "its because of the Warp ya see" pile

Very true Daston, although they arent Void Shields necessarily, they are energy shields of some sort.

Must admit always thought it was just a very powerful force field that iwas designed to be used in space?

from BFG rulebook:

Powerful energy shields....teardrops of invisible force

Not sure where the Warp bit is from?

Void Shields do not protect from close combat assaulters or other vehicles moving through them. So i don't see it doing anything really. If it stopped everything it wouldn't be able to move.

This one.

Void shields are the things they use to protect space craft. Relatively slow moving stuff gets through them. That's why ships can launch fighters and bombers and the like. It's also why it's useful to do so. Small craft can get inside your opponent's shields and hit him where he's not protected.

I also don't think that void shields snap on and off. If they're like most things there is a time delay between activation and them being at full strength. You could rule that the PC's feel the shields activate and can make a dodge roll to get out of the way. Failure results in damage. Marines are too tough to be cut in half from a void shield. Even if they do it's just a fate point burned. The real bummer is having to be board for the whole fight.

Yeah there is a buzzing in the air before they activate.

Titanicus indicates that the Titans have Void Shields that are fully capable of defending the walker from other Titans in both ranged and melee combat, though in the latter case it's possible to just beat the shield down and follow-through with the attack.

In one of the Gaunt's Ghosts novels (I swear it feels like there's a hundred of them) they're invading an installation held by the Bloodpact by means of grav-chutes and aerial assault. During the battle, the enemy activates some void shield doorways while one character is lying half in/half out of one.... and loses both his legs when it activates. No mention of them teleporting off into the Warp or anything.

That may have once been the case, but I think the canon has move towards more science-based than magic-based for the Void Shields.

To answer the OP: No. Void Shields are like a bubble around the thing carrying it. It's not a solid field of shield energy from the outer layer to the hull of the vehicle... so if they're already inside the bubble-area when the field activates, they won't be harmed. They should not, however, attempt to walk through the Void Shield. That would be.... exceedingly unwise. Space Marines are not tough enough to not disintegrate when walking into a Void Shield.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

See though, in order for you to be correct, everything the void shield touches would be damaged, including terrain, building, unmoving vehicles. Old fluff is that these shields only stop very fast moving objects, but allow stationary or slow moving objects through. If they were active against everything the titan would not be able to move.

I'll have to look up my epic rules, but I do not believe that shields helped you in any way against close combat attacks, whether from other titans or infantry.

If the Shield was not mobile, yes, but that isn't the case. A Void Shielded ship in space never stops moving, but never runs into its own shield.

The Titan is the one generating the "bubble". Thus, the bubble moves as the Titan moves. The Titan never comes into contact with its own Void Shield.

If the bubble is effective against everything, then anything it touches disintegrates. No worries there.

If it isn't, then the bubble passes over/around it, and the Titan continues its walk, probably crushing underfoot whatever structure it was that the Void Shield didn't eat. This would, theoretically, allow a unit in the cover of a hardened bunker or other structure not destroyed by the Void Shield to then attack the Titan... though the chances of such things ending well are slim.

Space is full of nothing! The shield is generated by the shield generator which is attached to the vehicle, if you can't move the shield you can't move the vehicle. By your argument a titan would ave to stop if it comes in contact with a hill, big rock or building.

The Titan is the one generating the "bubble". Thus, the bubble moves as the Titan moves. The Titan never comes into contact with its own Void Shield.

Right but that bubble is touching the ground right? and anything else in the titans path!

If the bubble is effective against everything, then anything it touches disintegrates. No worries there.

Yeah so it just destroys all the ground in front oh and benieth it! What do you need titans for, just make fast moving shield generators that run over everything.

No, there are no and never were rules for titans destroying scenery just by walking by them. It crushed whatever it stepped on, but that's it. You could ram a titan with a rhino, it goes right through the shields. This is basically how that were described in titan legions, i can try to go dig up the book if you need quotes.

Void shields are useless against CC attacks and ranged attacks from less then 12" away(representing getting under the shields)

so Voids don't stop slow moving solid objects from coming through.
