This may take a couple posts, I have a game tomorrow for which I am posting my list now, as will my opponent. I'll give a little bit of a back drop and then hopefully discuss a little strategy. Neither list was created for competitiveness, this is a strictly learn and have fun game.

In a recent push from the Helicos System, the forces of Kelyra are expanding into more contact with core imperial forces. Having been cut off and then abused by the reclamation forces tensions are already running high. Kelryan forces finally bump heads with the Doom Eagles Space Marine Chapter in a neighboring system. What the initial disagreement is unknown, but who fires the first shot is about to be determined.

Lt. Colonel Rhane looked out across the barren rocky land at the amassing marine force. How had it come to this? Fighting over a worthless dying planet, far from home.

The Kelyran 3rd Regiment, reclamation and exploration, had only just surged from their system. The neighboring systems had mostly been abandoned and his superiors wanted these territories reclaimed. Unfortunately the 3rd was an exploratory and reclamation force, there had been no expectation of hostile encounters, let alone full scale resistance.

Initially Rhane had attempted to negotiate with the treacherous marines, however hostilities and accusations of misplaced loyalties soon turned talks towards acts of violence. Having no alternatives Rhane had called for additional deployment, and possible aid from his home systems own marine chapter. But home was far away, and the threat imminent.

His decision to strike now before the marines could organize a proper offensive had been made immediately. The majority of Rhanes forces were comprised of laborers and convicts, only a hand full of Rhanes personal escort were experienced soldiers. Rhane knew he would have to play to the strength of conviction his men possessed, strike before the horror of facing the emperors chosen worriers sank in."

The imperial forces led by Lt. Colonel Rhane - 1500pts

HQ:
CCS - MoO, Astro, 2 Plasma Guns, AC - (150) Rhanes command
CCS - 4 Plasma w/chimera (165)
Elite:
Marbo (65)
Stormies w/2 melta - (105)
Troop:
PCS w/4 Flamers, Chimera (105)
IS w/Commissar, 2 PW, LC (120)
IS w/PW, LC (80)
Penal Legion (80)
Penal Legion (80)
Veterans w/3 Plasma (115)
FA:
Vendetta (130)
HS:
Hydra Flak Tank (75)
Executioner w/Plasma Sponsors (230)
Total: 1500

Current Tactics: With out knowing the lay out of the board, deployment or mission, but knowing that my opponent is mostly codex marines with tacts, rinos, assault marines and dreadnaughts I can come up with a basic plan of action.

Vets ride in vendetta, will reserve vendetta and PL (roll dependent) to out flank if going second, deploy and scout if running first.
Infantry screen to hold primary objective with firing line, melta command and PCS to advance and clear out objectives
Vendetta to do what it does and hopefully dump some plasvets to hold a far side objective, and Penal legion to go crazy and SHANK some marines! (hopefully)
Exicution and Hydra will just do what they do best.

Frankly, maybe neither list was built for competitiveness, but the IG list is much stronger. Deathshead, almost all of your army is on foot, you have nothing long range stronger than a missile launcher and only 1 melta weapon. At least keep all your men at full 2" coherency or you will get slaughtered by that executioner. I suppose your best chance is to try and stop the plasma-toting veteran and command squads' rides with S8 shooting and then rapid-fire the occupants before they can blast you. Meanwhile, try and bring some powerfists into contact with that leman russ.

Eldar Corsairs: 4000 pts
Imperial Guard: 4000 pts

Corregidor 700 pts
Acontecimento 400 pts

Doomeagles, your only hope is to get into CC. I would suggest getting some heavier weapons in there soon, especcialy when going up against a high mech army like this.

@ Castitas

Check your numbers again. The infantry squads should be 135 points and 90 points. I'm assuming LC means lascannon.

Also, it's true that points could be be spent elsewhere. Make the Executioner a bare Russ and get a chimera to protect your vulnerable veterans. However, non-competitive lists are very fun in my opinion.

Good luck.

Outside the DarkTower, amongst the roses.

I went from reading a horus heresy book to 1500 point fully painted marine army in like three months so I know my list is bad but it is what i have, I don't even have the other two flamers for my Tac squads.

To me this is the Kobyashi Maru, how to face death and learn from it.

I have a feeling if we swapped lists and Cas took the power armor he would still win due to his experience alone.
I have more to worry about then that executioner, I think my rookieness is my biggest disadvantage.

@sexbobomb Thanks for catching that I've fixed the issue

I'm bringing some bits with me when I head out, with any luck I can help green stuff mod what he's got into something a bit more frightening.
This hopefully will prove to be the first of a string of games, with luck we will see some improvement in list and tactics. Although I do plan on busting out some ogryns for round two! I prefer to run about 1/4 of my army as random stuff I enjoy. In this case it was the PL and foot in the middle of a mech vet style list. I am currently in the process of repairing my army, having sold about 80% of it and am left utilizing what hasn't sold. With in the next few months I hope to rebuild my tank stock and switch to a heavy foot slogging guard list.

@deathshead420

Coherency and cover are going to be key for you, as will deep striking to get behind the russ. If you can get a ML right up its tail pipe it will go down, or at the least not be able to retaliate, giving you a chance to close with fists. While you are lacking lightning claws and storm shields (everyone's favorite termie load out) the storm bolters are actually really really nice at taking down guardsmen from a distance. Against the guard you're gonna want Antitank and gak load of bolters. Combat can be your friend, but only really for dedicated assault squads, blobs can tear the crap out of unprepared tac squads.

Hopefully we'll update with some photos, mission and deployment before things start rolling here today

Mission Type: Seize Ground
OUr Objectives: (5) A statue thing in the center, the ruined basilisk guard, the mask an awkward orb and a pile of auto cannons.
The Board:

Deployment Type: Spear Head

The armies:

We rolled for turn and deployment.

Mike won the roll, and chose to deploy first.

All the tac squads were deployed as combat squads, one combat squad with the captain deployed in the rhino.
I deploy my guard in the opposite quadrant, the blob situated ontop of an objective in my deployment zone, I chose to outflank my Penal Legion and Deep Strike the Vendetta full of Vets

Doom Eagle Deployment:

Imperial Guard Deployment:

The table after deployment:

I deploy my Storm Troopers as Infiltrators, and roll to seize initiative. I roll a 6, and seize the imitative from the doom eagles.
More to come soon.

Turn one begins:

My turn:
I advance my chimeras and pop smoke, the infantry line holds and opens fire.
I miss with my las cannons despite the order bring it down, the company command squad manages a lucky shot and wrecks the rhino
The Hydra opens fire and misses despite being twin linked and the Executioner is found to be two inches out of range.

Mikes Turn:
He advances his squads, spreading out and running the assault marines
His dreadnaught manages to immobilize a chimera while the rockets shake the other

Turn two: So far things are pretty even

I roll for reserves, Marbo and both Penal Legions arrive.
I roll the executioner rolls forward, i advance with the shaken chimera and bail out my command squad inside to fire on the dreadnaught with 4 meltas, I also advance my stormtroopers out of cover
The penal legions I deploy on his side right behind some tac marines
I begin shooting, I manage to glance and stun the dreadnaught but not destroy it
MARBO DOES SOMETHING!!! marbo lands a demo pack in the center of a 5 man squad and eliminates them
My storm troopers manage to take down some tactical marines.
I assault with my knife fighters and they whipe out a combat squad

End of my Turn:

Mikes Turn:
One of Mikes Terminators comes in by the infantry squad and fires on the blob with frag and storm bolt guns, killing 9 of the 20 guardsmen
One of his tactical squads turns around to flame the knife fighters finishing them off. A second squad fires on marbo killing him.
Mike manages to eliminate my melta command squad and wrecks the immobilized chimera with his assault troops.

Begin Turn Three:
I roll for reserves and the vendetta brings in my veterans, i deep strike it back in my line to try and cover the termies now there
I open fire on the terminators and eliminate them with the executioner. The vendetta turns about and fires on a missile launcher tac squad
I shoot at more marines killing more with my storm troopers.
I assault the two squad remains with my last penal legion on the flank and I flame and assault the assault marines with my exposed platoon command killing one, the assault goes poorly and i lose the squad.
The Penal Legion loses but holds on, suffering a single casualty.

Mikes turn:
His second squad of termies lands on the board behind the wrecked chimera using it for cover against the executioner.
Termies manage to pop the vendetta in shooting while the assault marines move closer to my lines. The PL fight continues, i lose another two but hold on.

Begin turn Four:
The surviving plasma vets advance and open fire on his terminators killing two.
My executioner fires on his assault marines and misses all its shots. My stormies continue to pick of marines. The PL fight continues with no change.
(no photo)

Mikes turn, He fires on and assaults my veterans, a single survivor manages to flee.
His assault marines manage to reach my executioner and wreck it.
Our PL marine fight continues some more

Turn 5:
My stormies finish off a tac squad
My company command squad uses its plasma to finish off his assault squad

Mikes turn, there is only minor killing, his remaining terminators advance to contest my objective and kill more guardsmen. The combat with the PL continues, minor losses of PL, he makes a run for a second objective.

Game Continues Turn 6:
My stormies attempt to finish off his 2 marines holding the center objective but cover saves them. I manage to bring down a terminator but one remains contesting the objective.

On mikes turn he continues to run towards a second objective but again rolls a one to run and fails to reach the objective. His captain assaults my storm troopers, killing two and taking a wound in the process.
The game ends with his marines holding one objective and contesting my one. His marines fail to finish my one remaining Penal Legionnaire.

Marines - 1, Guard - 0
Marine Victory!!!!

Good Job Mike on your first real game and victory
