The workers at my Games workshop.... actually use non GW products(bits and paints) to build and assemble their personal model and terrain; in fact the worker who was painting the terrain was not using any citadel paints at all!(he was using Vallejo)

I'm guessing I my this store is one of the nicer stores; how's your local GW?

Mine is very nice. I have only had one or two problems but I'm a big boy and I deal with them. They allow scratch builds as long as some effort was put into them.

Mine seems similar to yours...
Though they don't allow non-GW models and such as long as something is either all scratchbuilt or 51% GW they'll allow it.

I don't think they've ever had any GW stores in my state. And they closed all the ones in the more-populous neighboring state with a metric ton of colleges and universities. I think I have to go two or three states over to find a GW.

Somewhere Ironic

The one in Montreal is "shoves GW products down your neck". Completely unpleasant, and the locals who go there are snobs who view anyone with less than 'eavy metal painting standards to be not worth your time.

If anyone from MTL sees this, and disagrees, then what can I say? Musta been sheer coincidence to occur the half dozen times I went there.

I wouldn't say "radical" but I know that the manager at my local store has suggested bits sites instead of just buying the entire box to get one part. He also has recommended coolminiornot and talks about how cool some other company's models are.

So definitely not "all out GW". He does of course suggest products to but he doesn't shove it down your throat. Which makes sense. For example, my friend the other day was testing out a drill for his stompa because he was putting in some magnets, so the manager suggested he buy one.

Holy gak! Another Montrealer! They do shove things down your throat often, but I have been able to talk to the manager about Warmahordes and how I started it. They love helping me out with painting and modeling tips, although Arnaud is a bit intimidating to talk to. I do often sense a bit of elitism from people who paint and play there, but in general the employees are helpful, if really really pushy. The manager very much does tow the company line and doesn't comment when I bring up rumors all that often. I will how ever, make all my future big purchases online and only buy the odd thing there and all Finecast, since they're very good about exchanges for that.

Question: So when it is said "they don't allow non-GW models" does that also include bits? Like if I have a maxmini head on a SM, would that not be allowed? I mean, 90% of the model would be GW.

Generally it depends on store to store. It can range from them enforcing the model has to be anywhere from 51-100% GW.

The guys in my local are great. They build Terrain, sit and paint with the boys, are constantly giving advice and helping the newbies. I forgive them for marketing their stuff every now and then, as they are a damn store trying to fill their quotas, like every other business.

Our local FLGS encourages people to create more terrain even without GW products on them, as well as scratchbuilds of titans and huge FW models, we do support the store with purchases even without them pushing products.

That's actually pretty amazing, the staff at my local GW are pretty diligent in sticking to Citadel hobby supplies.

Also kudos to your store using vallejo paints, they are without a doubt the best paint I have ever used and I'd recommend them to everyone.

My local GW is a mixture of kids or elitist snobs. The staff are hit and miss but generally I don't care for their attitudes.

Not all that helpful. Very pushy. Not interested from the second you have handed over the cash.

I buy probably 80% eBay, 15% Amazon and 5% from a GW store because of the continued bad experiences in the store reaching all the way back to before it's first big move in the mid 90's.

My GW shop is very friendly the manager is always happy to help anyone. He also never pushes you into buying products but he does recommend GW things.
Its strange to see the GW staff use non-GW things as they get a discount on GW products.
They also allow models to only be 50% GW.

My local GW store used to be in a nice mall storefront, open regular mall hours near to decent highways and other speedier modes of travel. Now they are in a strip mall in an area that I can only get to by riding through a few hundred traffic lights to reach and on week days they don't open until 2:30 in the afternoon...

I haven't been there since they moved. I just don't have the time to get there and when I do they aren't even open.

Luckily my local store started carrying GW this year so now I can just get everything I want through him...that is as long as he can order it. Of course I can always go to the website and have new stuff show up on my front porch, but I do occasionally enjoy walking into a GW store and being surrounded by so much GW product all at once...

Actually, the Woodbridge store (the one that used to be in Potomac Mills) went out a number of years ago. There is no GW in Alexandria, but there is one in Springfield. From my experiences, the staff at the Springfield store are pretty cool, and they do have a lot of support for things like Specialist Games. The only problem is that, like many GW stores I have seen, it can get a bit too croweded and noisy for my tastes.
