"Not my Finest Hour"
Background
I wasn't able to paticpate in the the league this week due to being late by about 30 minutes. I was donating a double red at the Red Cross and it took way longer than usual due to some staffing issues.
However I was still able to get a game in thanks to Shawn agreeing to play 2 games in one night. He has been playing space wolves for sometime now and really knows the ins and outs of his army. Games with him are quite challanging and always fun. I played an unofficial championship game to decide the winner of the last league cycle and came out the victor.
His 4
WL unit is nigh unkillable and is over half his points and becomes the automatic focus of the game whether I want it to be or not!
My list is the same I've been playing for awhile with the switch up of adding 3 Deff Koptas and a Bike in exchange of 1 mob of 20 boyz. I've never played with Deff Koptas and wasn't quite sure what to due with them.
His list:
Wolf Lord with Runic Armor,
SS, Thunderwolf, Frost Blade 220 points
Wolf Lord with Runic Armor,
SS, Thunderwolf, Thunderhammer 225 points
Wolf Lord with Runic Armor,
SS, Thunderwolf, Wolf Claw 215 points
Wolf Lord with Runic Armor,
SS, Thunderwolf, Frost Axe, Melta Bombs 225 points
3 x 10 Grey Hunters with 2 Meltas and Mark of the Wulfen, Rhino
2 x 5 Long Fangs with 5 Missile Launcher, Razorback with Twin Lascannon
My List:
Wazdakka
KFF Mek with Cybork, Burna, and Bosspole
3 x 5 Lootas
3 x 5 Bikers including Biker Nob with Bosspole
2 x 20 Boyz including Nob with Bosspole and 2 with Rokkits
3 x 1 Deff Kopta
2 x 1 Deff Dread with 2 Rokkits
1 x 3 Killa Kans with Grotzookas
We roll and get
DoW Annihilation. I get first turn and take it. Shawn reserves everything.
Right away I turn out to be a hypocrite. I claim to believe that I play every game the same and that league games or no more special than "friendly" games.
That or the effects of donating 2 pints of RBC's are affecting my judgement. For some odd reason I deployed 2 boyz mobz with the
Kff Mek at 12" knowing full well that that the 4
WL's can eat through them without blinking. Had this been a league game I would have walked on everything in true Killa Kan wall style. I truely felt bad after the game playing differently and not giving my opponenet the best game possible. Grrrr.
I didn't take a picture of an empty board save my 2 units of Boyz and
HQ. If you're the type of oddball who wants to see such a nearly naked board, this isn't going to be that type of BR, my kid may read this someday!
This first picture shows the end of my turn. The 2 Boyz Mobz are in the center of the board after moving and running. The
KFF mek is attached to Red Mob and near the back and between. The Kans and Dreads walk on BEHIND the boyz:(
Lootas walk and run and 2 mobz actually make it on top of buliding the first turn due to great run rolls! All bikes Turbo 23" and Waz is attached to 1 Kopta at the very bottom of the shot.
BTW the rivers are difficult and the ponds at both ends are impassable terrain.
Everything else is area terrain/true line of site. I reserve the other 2 Koptas for outflanking.
From top to bottom in this pic (which means left to right since I forgot to rotate it) he deploys 1 Long Fang squad in the black ruins getting a run roll of 1. Thier Razorback moves on 6" next to them empty and fires at something.
Next to that is a Rhino full of Troops whom I deeply respect. I think
SW's have some of the best basic troops with Grey Hunters, and for cheap as well.
Another
LF Razorback moves on 6" empty and fires. The 2nd
LF squad deploys in the grey ruins getting a much better run roll.
His 4
WL run together onto the board.
Fianlly, next to the board edge is 2 more Grey Hunters in Rhinos. Everything is grouped up in just half of his deployment zone, trying to evade my Lootas and easily able to help each other out.
My second turn sees one Deff Kopta from reserves come in on my right, bottom of the pic. The boyz and top bike mob move forward.
I send in a unit of bikes to plug the gap at the bottom between the pond and the board edge. Waz and the Kopta fall back a tad and the 3rd bike mob moves toward the stream to give the Kans and Dreads time to catch up.
My goal is to shoot the quad
HQ unit as much as possible. The Lone Deff Kopta shot and assaulted the forward Rhino imobilizing it while attemptimg to block his 4
WL unit. My top Bike squad killed 2 long fangs in the black ruins. Most of my other fire is pretty ineffective.
His turn he rolls
2D6 instead of 3 for the 4
WL unit getting snake eyes and moving 1 inch into terrrain to move around the deff kopta. His run roll and 12" assault is still enough to get 2
WL's into
CC with the stopgap bike unit. 1
WL causes 2 wounds and the second 4 wounds which is just enough to kill off the unit before I can even swing my
PK, I cause no wounds as this unit evaporates. He doesn't even need the other 2
WL's!
My turn 3 I move the middle bike mob down in an attempt to slow him down and fire anything that in range at his
WL unit getting causing only 3 wounds. Something of mine wrecks one of his rhinos up top as my bikes move into kill of his Long fangs.
My second reserved Deff Kopta comes in and shoots and assaults his rear rhino. I assualt his
WL with my bikes and he passes all 3++ saves. My second Bike Mob dies for nothing. In fact he only ever fails 1 3++ save all game. Very frustating. I really think the
SS is underpriced. Grumble grumble...
I'm not quite sure what happened on his third turn as the pictures appear to show him not moving his
WL's.
On my 4th turn I finally get some luck when 1 squad of 5 Lootas inflicts 4 unsaved wounds on his 4
WL squad, 1 on each. This is clearly the highlight of the game for me as it goes quickly downhill for me.
Waz and his Kopta sidekick
TB to near the Bikes on top as they are having trouble with the Long Fangs in the runis. Eveything that doesn't shoot the 4
WL's is able to reduce his one Grey Hunters near the middle to just 4 models. Red Mob moves across the river while the kans still try to move up.
At the end of his turn 4 he has easily wiped out 20 Boyz with Nob and suffered no wounds in return. The big empty spot in the middle was where Red Mob just died. I like this picture. It shows all my Kanz and Dreds looking where the
WL's used to be.
My turn 5 has Waz and and Kopta finish off the Long Fangs in the black ruins and consolidate towards the second squad of Long Fangs in the Grey Ruins. My Kanz and Dreds keep trying to move towards his
WL's as they move into yellow mob. The Mob causes one wound and then is wiped out while his long fangs explode a Dread.
Turn Six has Waz and Kopta wreck a Razorback and Rhino while he wipes out the Kans and loses another
WL. Game ends with no turn 7.
Wrap up:
Like I said, I hope I gave my opponent a fun and challenging game. I played pretty horribly starting with deployment. His
WL's ran through 3 Bike mobz, 2 full Boyz mobz, 3 Killa Kans, and would probably have killed my Dred had we had a 7th turn. Waz might have taken a single wound, but he was having a fun time. I usually consider him my suicide
HQ but he survived while my
KFF Mek survives most games unscratched. Killing Long Fangs is always fun and satisfying.
I didn't take many pictures during the second have of the game so I hope you all can understand what was happening. Essentially the
WL's went through mob after mob passing almost all their saves and laughing all the way. Next week I should have a better report.
Thanks for reading.
P.S. Bonus pic of a Settler's of Cataan game I played with the wife and a couple of her friends. Check out the awesome wheat setup. I deployed first and still lost the game to my wife!
