I'm thinking of making my own non-chaos renegade SM chapter, and was wondering what chapters are out there that didn't turn into Chaos but are against the Imperium? Do they exist? And if they do, what are their reasons and fluff?

Violence is not the answer, but it's always a good guess.

The Soul Drinkers. They're against the Ideals of The Imperium, but are still loyal to The Emperor. That's just off the top of my head.

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Renegade_Space_Marine_Chapters_(List)

You'll have to trawl this list for the ones that don't worship Chaos. Knights of Blood IIRC are still loyal but have been declared renegade sue to their frenzied nature which causes harm to both friend of foe.

Depending on which fluff you read, the Relictors might fit the bill. Previously, they'd been stomped by the Grey Knights for using Chaos artefacts (for the Emperor, obviously). Per the current SM codex, however, they're still a regular Chapter (if under suspicion).

Click for a Relictors short story: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/412814.page

And the sequels HERE and HERE

Final part's up HERE

Dragons, man. DRAGONS.

You could look to The Badab war for influence, but all but the Astral Claws were redeemed for that one.

Well i was planning on including to my chpater's fluff that they are a dying chapter, with no means of replenishing their numbers. So yes, they are hard-pressed for survival.

Violence is not the answer, but it's always a good guess.

Wow...
A chapter with no way to recruit and being hunter by the Imperium and probably other groups?
They are not hard pressed they are down right doomed there.

Inevitably doomed, yes.

Soul Drinkers are in the same barrel as the Night Lords. The official party line is that they "aren't Chaos" but they happily make use of mutations, unsanctioned Psykers, and all sorts of other unholy Warpcraft to get the job done.

Legion of the Damned. There's no reason you couldn't paint an entire army in Legion of the Damned colors.

Legion of the Damned are not renegades. They are the ghosts of loyalist Space Marines. They are in the SM codex. They are a special entity unto themselves.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I have also seen it argued that Alpha legion is actually a 'renegade' legion as they are not chaos worshipping. And may even still be loyal.

I am pretty sure that no fewer than 1 in 20 CRASSUS ARMORED ASSAULT TRANSPORTS you see are actually Alpha Legionnaires in disguise.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

At least 30 out of 10 ducks are also Alpha Legionnaires...

Well, goes without saying. Ducks are some pretty twisted, Chaos-infused bastards, they are.

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it still might be an Alpha Legionnaire.

What about Excorcists and those guys who kept bursting into flames? I don't think they were renagades per se but they were deemed heretics by the Inquisition.

Woops I was thinking of Relictors, the guys who use Chaos weaponry and stuff.

Now I have no idea why I said Excorcists...
