This is a report of firsts. This is the first battle report I've had a go at so forgive me if it's full of holes. It's also the first battle I've had for ages, and in all the excitement, one or two things may have been missed out!
3000 pts – What's more this was also the first battle of this size that we'd tried, as well as the first one where we'd both used super heavy units. We'd decided, in true apocalypse style, there would be no restrictions on the types of units we could have, so the forces lined up a little something like this:
Me – Chaos Space Marines – Pure Nurgle based army:
Chaos Lord with MoN, power wpn & plasma pistol (enjoying the view from atop of my Plague Tower)
1 Plague Tower
10 terminators with MoN and a mixture of weapons including 2 pairs of LC's (upgraded to champions), a reaper, ahvy flamer, 3 pwr fists, 2 combi meltas and a chainfist (to arrive by DS)
1 Dreadnought with t/l hvy bolter
3 obliterators (2 on the table operating seperately and 1 arriving by DS)
5 chosen armed with 3 meltas and a plasma gun in a Rhino
3 units of 10 Death Guard all with champions with power fists and a variety of chaos icons, meltas, flamers and plasma guns. (1 unit on foot, 1 unit in a Rhino, 1 unit in the plague tower)
34 Plague Zombies split into 3 units
My oppo – Orks:
1 Kustom Battle Fortress (KBF) with KilKannon, Big Zappa, Supakannon, Deathrolla, Ard Case and 2 big shootas.
1 Warboss with a powerclaw and bionics plus 18 ard boyz and a Nob w. Powerclaw all riding in the Battle Fortress
1 Mekboy Junka with a variety of stuff including a big zappa and a Big Mek riding it
1 Battle Wagon with a painboy and 7 Nobz with a variety of big choppas, powerklaws etc
1 Battle Wagon with 12 Tank Bustas, 2 Tank Hammers and a Nob
3 Killa Kanz with 2 rokkit launchers and a grotzooka
1 Big Trukk with a Supakannon
1 Megadred with a killkannon, rippaklaw and big shoota and scorcher
3 Warbuggies with Scorchers
2 Trucks with a Nob and 12 boyz each
Mob of 30 boyz on foot with 3 big shootas 2 rokkit launchers and a Nob w. Powerklaw
The battlefield was 7' x 5', when asked which way he wanted to battle my oppo chose lengthways (more fool him). A third party set up buildings and three objective markers. The markers where evenly spaced across the width of the table, one on the centre line and the other two about 6" into each players half. The set up was such that that there were two main 'corridors' going the length of the table which one could sends ones vehicles down. We set up our troops 2' in from the ends.
My oppo set up first, and I failed to steal the initiative so he went first too...
Turn 1: Nothing really happens
My oppo started to move forward then poured a hell of a lot of fire power my way and hit... absolutely nothing!
My turn to move up, I fires a shot from my plague mortar on the warbuggies but they shrugged it all off. Two shots from the Plague Tower demolisher cannons hit one of his trucks with the tank busters but a roll of snake-eyes failed to do anything – it was desperately disappointing! I moved my Rhino with the chosen closer to his KBF
Turn 2: First Blood!
More bombardment comes by way as all my oppo's transports converge (and group themselves together quite nicely) down the bottlenecks. First blood to him as he manages to kill.....2 zombies!
Succsess for me as I destroy his Junka with the Big Zappa with shots from the demolishers (as the game went on these proved to be quite devastating) and a direct hit from the plague mortar takes out several of the boyz mob. It is a this point my oppo realises he doesn't want any troops getting out of the trucks with that thing on the go especially as it had range enough to hit anything on the table!
Turn 3: Shoot the battle fortress!
More futile bombardment from my oppo – he kills one Death Guard - the term could'nt hit a barn door sprung to mind. "Is that it?" I ask and cackle. He growls and sneers at me.
I secure the objective in the middle of the table and take out more boyz in the mob with my mortar. I also reach the objective on the near side and fire at a nearby truck to no avail. I got a couple of hits from the chosen on the KBF, it suffers drive damage a looses a build point – nice! This time my demolishers take out the truck with the tank busters in but sadly they all get out unscathed. In the assualt round my dreadnought goes for his megadread – a tact which proved eventually suicidal, but it tied his dread up for a while and also meant mine wouldn't be going crazy and shooting my own troops, but I'm immobilsed quite quickly.
Turn 4: Shoot the battle fortress more!
My oppo takes out a few more zombies but is again having really lousy rolls (this makes a change). His tank busters skirt round and secure the objective on the far side of the battle field. In the close combat round, his warboss jumps out of the KBF and has a go at the Rhino with the chosen in but it stands firm. However my immobilsed dreadnought doesn't fair so well as it has it's arms pulled off!
I deep strike my obliterator in front of his KBF, fire and take another build point. More of his boyz die from the mortar, the remainder route. One of the Killa-kanz is taken out by shots from a demolisher and shots from troops in the Rhino and Plague Tower, although one of my plasma guns explodes and I fail both the armour save and the feel no pain roll. Melta fire takes out his truck on the nearside and half the occupants die (I love melta guns!). I also take out his Bigtruck with the Supakannon. His mega dread destroys mine and it stands there wrecked.
Turn 5: This is where it all went Nuclear!
After yet another inneffectual shooting round, my oppo destroys the Rhino with my chosen in by Close Combat attacks from his Warboss, thankfully they all get out unscathed – remember – this unit has three melta guns, and is currently sitting right in front of his KBF. The KBF tries to tank shock the Obliterator that is also literally right in front of it, even with its drive damage it can reach him. The KBF has a Deathrolla so I know I'm probably gonna die, so I risk a shot from the melta gun but it does nothing and my obliterator is crushed utterly!
I deep strike in my Terminators very close to the KBF so the combi meltas can finsh it off – this proved to be a big mistake! The chosen all fired their meltas at the KBF, they could hardly miss and at such close range, got to roll for double penetration (heh heh!) I took the last build point – destroyed! Now to roll for the damage – all I needed was 1-3 and it can sit there as a wreck and my Terminators can deal with the passengers when they disembark. I roll a 6! Apocalyptic explosion. Rolling 3D6 to determine the range – I roll 12! This takes out the following:
1 Ork truck (the resulting explosion killing half it's occupants)
1 War buggy plus 2 weapon destroyed results on the other 2
15 of the KBF's occupants
6 Terminators
All 5 Chosen
1 wound on the Warboss (who was now down to one wound after taking various fire)
I proceed to finish off the occupants of the truck with fire from the plague tower. My troops that have secured the nearside objective assualt the remaining Orks that survived their trucks destruction – I didn't want them assualting me and getting the benefits of the furious assualt etc. Three zombies assualt his Megadread (yes seriously) and all 3 survive! Four more assualt his tankbustas – only one of these survives the round.
Turn 6: This is the end
The stragglers from the KBF shoot and take out one of my Terminators. His Nobz finally disembark and join in the assualt on the nearside, all my Death Guard are slaughtered. Two zombies are still hanging in against the Megadread! The Tankbustas finally finish off the zombie they are engaging.
In my final round of shooting I take out his Warboss, six Tankbustas, the stragglers from the KBF and one of his buggies. His Megadread still fails to finish off the two zombies it's engaged with!
My victory was total! We had one objective each, but he was only left with a Battlewagon, the 7 Nobz and a Painboy, the Megadread, a few TankBustas and the Mekboy. I had the Plague Tower, the Chaos Lord, 19 Deathguard, 2 Obliterators, 3 Terminators, a Rhino and about a dozen Zombies.
Overall, it was an entertaining battle. The two main reasons my opponent did so poorly was his lack of ability to move around the battle field and his extraordinarily poor shooting. Whilst I hit pretty much everything I targetted.
Now to plan for our next encounter.......
