Hey guys, I finally decided what army to play after a loooong time trying to decide. I've never played a game so I am trying to get an idea of how an army feels from those of you who have been doing this for a while.
I plan on playing a Chaos Space Marines army but I am trying to understand a couple of rules in army composition and also wanted to know your opinions on which chapter to choose. I am currently stuck between a World Eaters army or a Black Legion army.
I think I would like to go world eaters, but I would also like to have a force that isn't 100% assault. Maybe have an assault oriented force, but I'm not sure if its possible or frowned upon to have a world eaters army ( we will be playing at 750 to start) that isn't all berserkers and CC troops.
Is it plausible to have a core of basic ranged CSM for support and a squad or 2 of nasty CC squads with the mark of khorne in this army, or is every squad expected to have the mark?
I'm mainly trying to see if I go World Eaters, if I will be stuck to the same charge tactic every game since they are primarily known for assault. I love the idea of assault troops, but i don't want to go the table every game with that same tactic.
I am also curious to know if you guys think Black Legion ( or even some other chapter like the Red Corsairs) would be a better play style for something like that.
Thanks!

A guideline inhabits the glow. Bedrawk washes a weekly correspondent in the sample. Chaos kicks the icon with a help. Can the office slide with an ignored terminator? A discriminate gang monkeys with Bedrawk with another cheer.

Alright sugarwalls that response is rather confusing. In answer to your question Bedrawk, you can have what ever army you want with what ever units you want and paint how ever you want. For a more fluffy World Eaters army you can use more then just the berserkers for troops, however to really stay with fluff you should not include any units with the mark of Tzeencth as Khorne hates psykers. You can use the normal troop and just give them mark of Khorne and you'll be fine.

Assault is good in the current metagame. However, the game right now has tons of mech and transports, and ideally you don't want to open those by assaulting them because then you will get assaulted by the people inside it!
Keep in mind that the current dex doesn't have rules for specific legions. The previous book had options for World Eater, Alpha Legion and other armies that were actually different. Now, you can pretty much just paint your army the color you want and pick whatever units you like and, as long as you don't get icons of the wrong chaos God, it's a themed army.
Black Legion is the most easily flexible and fluffy: you can get anything you want from the dex and it will fit.
World Eaters implies a more brutal, in-your-face style. If I had to do one, I'd either spam berserkers in rhinos backed by melta raptors with Khorne marks, or get a big red Land Raider filled to the brim with zerkers and Kharn, a few rhinos with either berserkers of khorne-marked chaos marines with lots of Melta, a pair of Oblits to hang in the back, and do a one-two punch of Obliterator artillery and assault.
|
In Boxing matches, you actually get paid to take a dive and make the other guy look good.
In Warhammer 40K, you're expected to pay cash out of your pocket for the privilege of having Marines and IG trample all over your Xenos/Chaos. |

Thanks for clearing that up for me guys. I appreciate it!
I love the color scheme of a world eaters army, but that may be more assault than I was looking for in a CSM army. Im sure it is extremely nasty, but If I was going to play an all out assault force I would probably go with orks or nids. Maybe I should stick with a more black legion themed army just for fluff reasons. Its going to be hard to stop myself from painting everything red though.
One last question. I was looking up low point army lists and saw some where people were talking about chaos gods favouring certain numbers of units in a squad but I didn't see anything about that in the current codex. Is that something that was in the old codex or am I missing something?
Thanks again guys!

The thing is, You don't HAVE to stick to fluff. It be nice and awesome because you are but the thing is, you're making an army for your OWN enjoyment.
If you want a World Eater theme army coloured army with a Squad of Thousand Sons in there, people might bitch and moan about world eaters won't let the 1Ksons live longer then the enemy they are fighting, but meh, who cares, its just a TT game.
The only thing you got to do is kinda stick to the right colours so people can see easily what marks people have. Might be confusing saying that something that looks painted nurgle is actually has the mark of khrone for example ^^
Although, You could just paint the shoulders the colours of the mark you got and still have a massively red army. Might look like an massive armour of khrone but you can glance at their shoulders and see what does what.
Also, with normal CSM, you probably will have a guy with a massive standard banner displaying the mark they have for the squad.
So yeah, I say go nuts, especially since I can't say nothing. I'm going to be trying to get some My Little Pony:Friendship is magic references into my chaos army. Don't know how to go about doing it without just plastering ponies all over my army however. xD

I am not sure why it is even supposed to be against the fluff? World Eaters as a Legion was disbanded by and large after Skalathrax with various groups of Berserkers tagging along whereever blood is to be spilled. Thousand Sons is pretty much in the same state. The most famous (ex-)Thousand Sons character Ahriman is no less than an exile from his own Legion.
The rag-tag gang of Berserkers, Rubic Marines, Slanneesh Prince and a few unmarked/undivided Marines or Cults like Raptors is a perfectly fluffy representation of about 99% of all Chaos Space Marine Forces roaming the 40K universe.

Meh, I'm going to default to my "I'm new to this whole thing" state and went with what other people are saying xD
But yeah, the point stands a little better now if true, do whatever you want to do. The only thing I would ask of my opponents is that they stick to the rules of the game and the rules of the codecs which is kind of expected without saying tbh though

If you go world Eaters then you coudl always have a core of CC troops supported by normal CSMs (dont forget they are pretty godo in assautl themselves).
Chuck a LR, 'Blitz or a Predator for long range poundage and you're set and still pretty fluffy.

The question is, do you want to win or do you want to make friends?
If you want to make friends: Field the fluffy army with units of your preference.
If you want to win:
1500
Daemon Prince, Wings, Mark of Slaanesh, Lash of Submission
Daemon Prince, Wings, Mark of Slaanesh, Lash of Submission
Plague Marines x7, Rhino, Plasma Gunx2
Plague Marines x7, Rhino, Plasma Gunx2
Obliterators x3
Obliterators x3
Obliterators x3
I've only used that once, and it happened in Annihilation. I won 10-3. However, it's so boring. The last list I ran is very fluffy, and it does well as long as your reserve rolls are decent.
Chaos Lord-Mark of Tzeentch, Daemon Weapon (he goes with them \/ )
Thousand Sons x9- Rhino, Bolt of Change, Personal Icon
Chaos Space Marines x10- Melta x2, Rhino, Aspiring Champ with a Power Fist, Icon of Chaos Undivided
Chosen x9- Rhino, Plasma x4, Nude Champ
Defiler
Summoned Daemons (I used horror models) x10
Summoned Daemons x10
Greater Daemon (Lord of Change)
That should come to 1,500, I love Tzeentch and his lores. People cry bad and overcosted with Thousand Sons, but when your squad vaporizes a squad of Marines in one shooting phase, feels good man. Let's not get into the Daemon weapon with a S4 AP3 Assault D6 shooting attack followed by 4+D6 power weapon attacks by him.
One thing I've done in the past is had a squad of 9 Khorne Berzerkers with x2 Plasma Pistols, and a Champ with power Weapon and plasma pistol. Then I throw Kharn into that squad and put all 10 men into a Daemonically Possessed Land Raider. That was a party, lemme tell ya. You should go high risk/high reward and run a Chaos Lord with Bloodfeeder, if I'm not mistaken he can potentially have 17 power attacks on the charge!

Yeah you're right. 3 Standard attacks, +1 For Mark of Khrone, + 2D6 attacks (which COULD be plus 12) for a Khrone Daemonic Weapon and then you get +1 for charging ^^
Can't wait to get a game with my Chaos Lord. Really tempted to some Terminators and get some Lighting claws on them. They would completely rip armies apart if they get close enough, which shouldn't be too hard using deepstrike (as long as your Lord is in Terminator Armour or has a Jumppack/wings... Although put a chaos lord with a jumppack/wings with a terminators might be a bit dumb since you would give up his jump ability x3)

You coudl wlays have a squad of 4 Claw termies and a termie Lord in a Land raider. Expensive but nasty. Especially if you make them all Termie Champions.....that wudl be..
2 attacks base (on the charge), 1 for champ, 1 for claws, 1 for khorne......so Termies with 5 attacks on the charge, with re-rolls to wound. ouchie.

I think I rather have them deep strike and just have more dudes.
and Actually, had a look in the codex and it is saying they have 2 as standard or 3 if they are a champion.
So yeah, they will all be pumping 6 each. So a squad of 4 with a Terminator lord would be charging with 33-41 attacks, depending on how awesome your 2D6 rolls are and you don't get a 1. If you get a 1 it will only be 21, and I say that pretty loosely since you can reroll to wound with Dual Lighting claws...)

Sweet! Make them using the FW Khorne termiantor kits and axes and you have a big pile of sexy. Just off the top of my head i think for the 4 Termies alone (without Lord or Land Raider) you're looking at approx. 250 points for the squad.

Wow! This has turned into an awesome thread! Thanks for all the feedback, you guys have helped me a ton. I really appreciate it.
Justus wrote:The question is, do you want to win or do you want to make friends?
We will just be playing friendly games, so I'm not looking to dominate. It's just a bunch of friends getting into the hobby at the same time and I want to make a force that I can have fun with and expand on. We are starting at 800 pt armies. It's an odd number but everyone agreed on it, so it should work out. Most of the games in the beginning will probably be 4 way free for all games, so I have to make a pretty balanced force.
I will say, those numbers you guys are throwing around (attacks) are just insane! I will definitely have some form of CC in there with either a chaos lord with berserkers or a super nasty terminator squad ( at higher point levels) just to walk around blowing up stuff. I doubt i will be able to fit any termies in our small points games to begin with unfortunately :(
With your help, I have definitely decided to go World Eaters. I love the colour scheme and the fluff. I was just uncertain about the ability to mix non melee troops.
Thanks again guys!

I'm actually really new to the game too kinda (tried playing before in the past but first time, I had no money to buy more then a HQ and Troop choice. The second time I brought a Tau Battleforce but never bothered to get most of it together and just gave up), and I've only played 2 games so far. First game was trying that tau army I brought and the second game was me trying chaos and wondering if I should bother. It went something like this, last week I went into the store and asked could I try a chaos army. 30 minutes of waiting around, he had a quick game ready for me. I managed to get 9 berzerkers into melee combat against a squad of 5 troops and he just said right, hold your hands out, *puts in 18 dice* 2 attacks from each dude, +1 each for charging *gives me an extra 9*, Plus an extra 1 each for two handed weapons *gives me another 9* *holds 36 dices* Now roll. Also, I was throwing extra attacks left right and center with the army too (Had a squad of 1ksons which as a sourcer lead with a power weapon that game me +3 attacks) and Abbadon (which game me a an 4 attacks plus an extra D6 to his attacks), that completely sold me on the army. Walked out of that store with a codex and a Terminator Chaos Lord Now brought a pack of Zerkers because I love how they look and how they work. Want to try and get a Rhino for them so I can get them across the battlefield without taking too many loses

Well tactically, and depending on what your friends play, you will need to either catch or lure your opponent into a position where you can unleash your Berserkers. They are outstanding melee-fightings, but they lack some of the long-range delivery and mobility available to more recent armies. And with Berserkers especially, you want to charge, not be charged, to get the benefit from Furious Charge.
So think of it not only in terms of "guns needed to kill enemy tanks/transports". Think of it also in terms of how you might get your opponent to be in the place where you can hit them with a charge from your Chainaxe-nutters.

you coudl either buy a squad of SM assault termies and then just add ther Forge World kit to them. Or buy the claw ars from a bits site. Bitz Box sells then for £1.50 each so you're looking at £12 for all of them. But then you also have to buy the chaos termie kit on top of that cost. Converting SM Termies would be the cheaper option.
