Hi all,

I'm wondering if any of you have any experience working with humbrol spray paints. As in, these guys...

http://www.humbrol.com/paints/modellers-spray-paint/?page=2&sortorder=

I'm thinking about picking up a few cans of red matt to basecoat a small space marines force as I don't really have the time to prime, then basecoat by hand (read: I'm a bit lazy). As well as that, I live near plenty of stores that sell it so I wouldn't have to wait for a mail order if I ever ran out.

I know a key thing to bear in mind is coverage - I don't want to lose a lot of detail on the model, but as I'm not a great painter, a little loss of detail is fine by me. Apart from that, any advice or help you can give is much appreciated. Any similar alternatives would be great too.

I've never heard of that brand personally, but it seems a bit pricey (~$8/can US). I'd grab a simple can of Krylon if it's available (pretty sure it is in your neck of the woods, but that's an assumption).

Try it out on a single mini or 2, tell us how it goes. Worst case scenario: strip the paint with dettol

Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one?

I haven't been able to track down Krylon here, but thanks for pointing out the price issue - I thought £5 was quite reasonable but now it does look a bit pricey.

I tried a can of humbrol today on a couple of marines. I had a can of 'desert tan' that I picked up for some modern day/gulf war minis that I have. The coverage is good but there is some loss of detail - the paint comes out quite fast and is a LOT thicker than GW primer (probably a bit of a silly mistake to assume it wouldn't be). I might pick up a couple of cans of the red anyway and just try to spray a little less...er...liberally. A couple of cans for £10/$16 that should do enough for about 500pts of miniatures isn't too bad if it saves me time on basecoating them.
