With my distancing myself from Warhammer 40k (the game), I'd still like to be immersed in the Universe. I found that I can do this through GW's specialist games, which they mercifully haven't touched in quite a while, thus allowing the fans to come and and make improvements where need be.

So, after getting an itch for some space combat, I think I'd like to start up a couple of Battlefleet Gothic fleets - Imperial Navy and Chaos, to be precise. So, here's a couple of lists, both at 1070:

Chaos:
2 Devastation Class Cruisers
2 Carnage Class Cruisers
2 Slaughter Class Cruiser

Imperial:
1 Mars Class Battlecruiser
2 Lunar Class Cruisers
2 Dictator Class Cruisers

Thoughts?

Well my first thought is: BFG is awesome! I just started and am really enjoying it.

My 1005 pt list is:

Mars,
2x Lunar,
Dictator,
3 x Sword,
Fleet Admiral + Extra Reroll.

Don't forget that you need an admiral if you are over 750 points. You may want to think about adding some escorts to your fleet, Imperials can benefit from the extra agility. You also took 12 launch bays at 1k, which is a lot. Not neccessarily a bad thing but it may be too much. Also worth a note is that cruisers come in packs of two, so you will have one spare.

Of course, I'm quite new and hardly an expert.

Welcome to the game! I think you will find it a great way to keep yourself immersed in the 40k universe.

Trickstick has a valad point about needing fleet commanders, and really, you will want one since you have two carrier fleets. Admirals provide higher leadership and re-rolls, which help with passing Reload Ordnance checks. The Imperial fleet in particular will be relying heavily on passing its reload ordnance checks (for both attack craft and torpedoes) since it doesn't have all that much direct firepower.

Since leadership is randomly rolled for before each game (outside of a campaign setting, that is), it will be inevitable that you will have at least one of your carriers suffering from poor leadership at some point. In addition to a good admiral and some re-rolls, you can use squadroning to your advantage to join a ship with poor leadership to a stronger one (the squadron uses the higher value).

I also agree with Trickstick's advice on escorts; as you have probably noticed, the IN's cruisers are more expensive than their Chaos counterparts. The escorts, especially the always-useful Sword, are a great way to counter that disadvantage.

I like your lists though I would drop the mars for escorts. At this point, you have a good amount of launch bays. Only one nova cannon may not be spectacular. I think an Armageddon would be a nice option instead. Or, you could get a decent amount of escorts. I recommend swords at this level.

I like the Chaos list so far. I personally run 2 Devastations and 2 Carnages in my 1500 list.

And welcome to the game!
