After repeated failure, Lorgar, the true Chosen of The Pantheon, overpowers Abbaddon and takes control of the forces of Chaos. He unites his brothers and their Legions, leading a 14th Black Crusade, breaching the Gate once and for all, and leading it on a war not seen since the Great Schism. The Tyranids munch their way through the Tau empire, the Necrons re-awaken and lead a purge of the Galaxy. All is thought lost for The Imperium, until the Primarchs return, with their Chapters.

Tyranids take out a major sector, moving deeper into space, Tau expand further, and chaos have another black crusade. Have some major events, change things up a bit and presto, new story, same game.

As the war continued, the tyranids moved further and further into the galaxy. The necrons awoke more and more. All other events were irrelevant because eventually only Necrons and Nids were left, both being essentially numberless and immortal. The tyranids realised that the necrons were not biomass and lived on dead worlds, so ended up just avoiding them. Once done with the galaxy, the nids floated away and the necrons went back to sleep because every living thing was dead. The end.

I like to think that, if there are huge numbers of Tyranids coming (and it's only hinted at), that the Orks will see this as the greatest Waaagh of all time and they'll unite behind da Proffit of Gork and Mork, Ghazghull Mag Uruk Thrakka and wipe them out forever.

The 42nd Millennium:
Corrupted Emperor gets reborn as the Corpse God, civil war ensues as Chaos subtly splits the Imperium in two. Ecclesiarchy stays loyal to the Emperor, the "heretic" planet of Mars gets completely destroyed in a giant apocalyptic battle. Most Marine Chapters and the surviving Mechanicus form the resistance once they notice what's really going on. Worship of the Emperor becomes outlawed in the liberated territories. A regency council similar to the Terran High Lords heads the coalition, led by the successor of Marneus Calgar who was slain as a traitor when attempting to reason with the Emperor.
Whilst some join the Corpse God's unholy legions, many individual Chaos Cults and CSM warbands continue to harass both sides in the conflict, in case of campaigns against the Reborn Emperor either because they are not privy to the as of yet still subtle changes going on below the surface or because their patrons simply revel in the ongoing conflict and mayhem.
Meanwhile, Tyranids continue to eat up large portions of populated space. Orks go on larger Waaaghs now that Imperial response has slowed down due to internal unrest. The escalating conflict throughout the galaxy also forces the Eldar - who are even fewer now - into a somewhat shaky but necessary alliance with the Tau Empire, eventually resulting in some sort of interplanetary commonwealth. Through guile and treachery, Tzeentch and Slaanesh gain access to Comorragh and sever the strands holding it in the webway, slowly drawing the gigantic city deeper into the warp. Those Dark Eldar that manage to escape split up in many new Kabals with a greater degree of individuality, some becoming wanderers amidst the stars whilst others attempt to erect semi-permanent settlements on secluded planets, enslaving the native population.
Epic enough?

The Emperor comes back to life. He reinstitutes the Great Crusade, starting with the Eye of Terror. The Chaos forces are put to the sword, and despite Chaos still being a danger, the Traitor Legions are reduced in strength such that they can never again threaten the Imperium. Only those Traitor Marines who eschew Chaos escape this massacre, but even they are too few in number to be a danger. Due to mysterious reasons, some of his followers begin to suspect that he isn't really the Emperor. A mystery individual forms a rebellion, which threatens to be a second Heresy. These forces are joined by the remnants of the non-Chaos Traitor Marines, and begins to gain speed. The Eldar have been beaten down so bad they have no choice but to throw in with the Dark Eldar. The Tau have become even more powerful, drawing more and more races into their collective. Whatever mystery force is behind the Tyranids' arrival in this galaxy has arrived, possibly bringing a new threat or possibly making the Tyranids even more of a threat. The Orks, inspired by the Tau, have begun to develop even greater and more insane technology, which is balanced by the inherent randomness of it. And some new mystery race has emerged as either an ally or an enemy.
The things I designated as mysteries are vague for a reason. Games Workshop can come up with these on their own. It's their job, after all. Seriously, though, this would make me a lot happier.

Tau will launch a massive crusade to conquer the galaxy for the grater good... Tyranid main fleet will arrive and start eating tryout the galaxy... Chaos will all unite and attack the galaxy in foce never to be seen from their side... It will be epic... Or Matt Ward will just write that Imperium won and that will be it... I think the first step is for the throne to fail. Then there is disorder and panic in the empire. All of man's enemies leap out from their corners of the galaxy and there is war on a scale not seen, ever.
The above should be the setting for Sixth Edition. It will give all non-human and chaos armies their time to shine.
Seventh addition would kick off with the return of the Emperor and him re-uniting his people. Also may bring back some Primarchs, with strong hinting at their return in the 6th Edition book.
That's where I would go. However, 6th edition fluff is already or being written now. So I am sure we will continue at a snails pace forward. GW has to milk this for at least the next 28,000 years.

Ruthless Interrogator
Confused
|
The Necrons who were obliterated on Mars weren't invading. They were infiltrating.
Even as their metal bodies were destroyed, they phased out to the nearest Tomb World-Mars. As soon as they were rebuilt, the Noctis Labrynth is infiltrated, and the Lord's Ressurection Orb awakens the Dragon. Billions of Necrons rise at once, and thousands of ships fly to Terra. The most desperate battle since the Horus Heresy is sparked. Trillions of Imperial Guardsmen and Imperial Navy personel, the Adeptus Sororitas and half of the Space Marines in the galaxy are pulled back and clash with ranks upon ranks of Necron warriors. At the last, the Imperial Palace itself is breached and humanity's last defenders, bolstered by the Custodes, hold the enemy back from touching the Emporer's carcass. But, little by little, the Necrons push forwards, one inch at a time.
But when all hope is lost, the Guardians of the Dragon-who have the power to repair anything with a single touch-emerge from the fires of war. A single Guardian survives to stride up to the Golden Throne amongst a hail of fire from Necrons and Humans alike, and touches the ancient machine with a single finger.
With that touch, the breach in the Webway within the throne seals itself. The Emporer's soul can rest from ten thousand years of battle with the Gods of Chaos, and reunite with his body. The battered corpse upon the Throne begins to heal itself, it's severed arm reattaching to the body, and stands. All of the Imperium is in awe, and new hope dawns in the defender's hearts. With the Emporer's might, the Necron forces are driven out of the Imperial Dunggeon and in to the void of Space. After 5 centuries of battle, Humans have victory-but at a terrible cost.
With the Dragon exposed, a division in the Mechanicus occurs and half of the Cult turns to the service of the C'tan. Abbadon's forces have conquered Cadia, and hundreds of ystems are ravaged by Chaos while Creed lies dead, the once mighty hero of the Imperium tortured and mutilated by the Daemons of the Warp for his defiance. The Tau Empire, with little resistance before them, has discovered FTL travel to rival Warp travel with none of the danger, and has grown to over 1000 fully developed Septs in the space of half a millenia. Armaggedon has fallen to the Orks, and thousands of systems fall to the green skin menace. Dark Eldar pillage and butcher at will, trillions of Xenos pour forth from the webway and they laugh as the galaxy burns around them. The Tyranid fleet has arrived in full-25 massive Hive Fleets, with the biological knowledge and power of a millenia's experience, consuming thousands more worlds. Xenos and Heretics approach from all sides, and the Imperium is barely a quarter of it's former size.
But Humanity does not stand alone. The Emporer's light shines true in the Warp, and his powers heal the most grevious of wounds. Jaghatai Khan emerges from the Warp, bloodied but defiant. Corax, Russ and Vulkan follow behind. As the powers of the Emporer spread throughout space, Gulliman and the Lion awaken, their wounds healing after thousands of years. The battered remains of the Eldar, weakened by the growing presence of Chaos, come to the Imperium's aid. The expanded Tau, seeing the benefit of such a powerful ally-and the danger of not supporting them-form a temporary alliance with the Imperium. Under the banner of the Emporer, the last forces of order gather for a final crusade- the Crusade of the End of Times, where the fate of the galaxy shall be decided. The Imperium shall arise greater than ever, or perish in the attempt.
Mankind will not pass quietly in to the darkness. We will have victory of death.
Then we all rant about how OP the Raven Guard codex is.
