As a starting IG player, I want to know which one would be more useful. I plan on a mix of infantry mixed with some heavy support. What I'm trying to decide is should I go with speed, or strength, because that open top could kill me.

Any advice would be appreciated.

As I've been informed, there've already been allot of threads on this topic.

You can use the search function to go though and find any useful bits of information in those old treads.

Personally, I avoid Armored sentinels, because the upgrading their front armor is about a 50% price increase. Which In my oppinoin isn't really worth the points.

I'll occasionally grab one if I've got open points and want to tarpit units that could eat through the IG's weak rear armor.

I have three models of sentinels and all are armored sentinels.

AV10 just does not cut it with the proliferation of heavy weapons and the like. Also in close combat, the sentinels fight as walkers, not as tanks, so attackers must hit the front armor rather than the back armor. So, the armored sentinel at Av12 cannot be damaged by models with S5 or below, and no special CC weapon or krak grenades. Conversely, Av10 means many more models can damage the walker.

The problem with the sentinels is that they are not that great a unit, although I love the models. Still, some people find use for them. Some run scout sentinels with LC as a way to get more AT - just keep them someplace with good cover and far away from danger. But there are far better ways to get AT in the same fast attack slot - vendettas. Another way is to put a heavy flamer on an armored sentinel and place it someplace in support of the main line. I have tried these things, with disappointing results. Overall, they are just too fragile and BS3 makes the LC on them look silly when they miss.

I would like to see them mount 2 heavy weapons, have Av12 all around, and cost 60 base. That will bring them back to the tabletop. Until then, they just stay pretty in my box.

They serve different purposes. Scouts are great for a cheap Outflanking unit that can take out enemy artillery and support units. The Armored can be tons of fun as fire support/counter charge. But as everyone has said they are bloody expensive compared to their weight of fire. But... It's really easy to find cover and you can even walk in the middle of a blob and get a cover save. And with it's, admittedly weak, CC ability it can hold an enemy unit if your troops break and run.
