A friend told me about a battle he saw where player 1 shot his own (still healthy) drop pod with a heavy weapon and it exploded killing some of player 2's gretchin. Was that legal? and if so does that aply to all vehicles or only transports or drop pods etc.?

The meaning of victory is not merely to defeat your enemy but destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavors, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory.

In general NO, there are some specific circumstances that change this but they are very specific they allow it. One of the very few is one of the GK units that can target a friendly squad with a blast marker and have it not scatter. This is the only one that I know of.

So what player 1 did was not legal?

Probably not, but it would depend on the specific circumstances.

You generally can't target your own units, but they can wind up being hit by a scattering Blast marker, for example.

Was he playing Grey Knights? if not then most likely he would not be able to shoot his own units.

On BRB page 15 in the shooting sequence box under the check line of sight & pick a target "All models in the firing unit that can see at least one enemy model in the target unit may open fire"

Though Insaniak has a good point if he targeted the gretchin with a blast marker(that did not cover friendly models when it was placed) it could scatter on to the drop pod and cause it to explode which then could also kill the cretchin.

I believe he was playing regular old ultramarines and specifically targeted the drop pod. So as I understand his move was not legal.

And for Grey Knights, as far as I know t's only Karamazov's orbital strike that can target friendly units.
