I am a long time fan of anything Nurgle, but once I started making an army list I gravitated toward a world eaters army for some reason. I think I liked the idea of having a strong mellee component in the army.
I have yet to play my first game and I will be buying some Forge World conversion bits for my army this weekend before I start slapping them together and I wanted to see what people think about the 2 armies and how fun and competitive are the 2 armies in general.
I know its common to mix units and get the best of both worlds, but I would like to make the army a pretty fluff accurate army, at least to begin with.
Thanks!

So, are you looking for ideas on how to incorporate Death Guard into your World Eaters or for any info on how to make a Death Guard army?

Well if you're looking for fluff accurarte, the World Eaters don't have alot of heavy firepower. In rules terms, this is going to mean that you might lose a few getting across the table. When you get across the table into HTH, though, your opponent's army is in trouble because your guys will be attacking a Strength and Initiative 5. Khorne also despises sorcery,, which he sees as cowardice (why he hates Tzeentch).
Death Guard, on the other hand, don't really have any transports, but are tough enough (what with a 3+ armor save and 4+ feel no pain) that they should be able to weather most incoming fire while crossing the table without taking that many casualties.

Take both.
Perhaps you have world eaters hunkered down in bunkers, not crazed maniacs but warriors of skill and cunning adept at using ruins to shield themselves and bolters to kill their enemy.
Or maybe you have Death guard, mutated by nurgles love, now brainless zombies in armour, using limbs to rip apart their foes in a gory melee

Seconded. Uniformity is for Loyalists. It's the multitude of themes that make a good and fluffy Chaos army.
The older rule books and fluff discription had intra-God rivalries and animosities in there for a reason; namely so that players would use them and represent them on the table. A chaos marine army that doesn't have some Nurgle/Tzeentch/Slanneesh/Khorne mix-and-match that is (at least in the mind's eye) just as likely to tear itself apart as they it is fighting the enemy kinda misses the heart of what makes Chaos Marines distinct: it'd just be a loyalist army with spikes.
Just substituting blue with red and "For the Emperor" with "For the Blood God" a Chaos Space Marine army does not make.

Just curious if I should make a more death guard oriented force or world eaters. I would like my army to have an overall theme and trying to decide which one to push for.
Techmarine1: Thanks for the info! Those are the kind of comparisons I am looking for.
Reaver83: Im trying to make a themed army that has a playstyle that would fit in with either a full Death Guard or World Eaters army. Im guessing most lists these days incorporate models from many different legions, but I would like to keep it as close to possible to the old days when people had more full on Nurgle, Khorne, etc.. type of armies. However, it might not be as competitive as it once was. Thanks!
Zweischneid: Thats what I was afraid of. I like the idea of the flexibility but I loved the idea of a single themed army. Sounds like i would be shooting myself in the foot though. Thanks for the info.
Does anyone have experience playing both types of lists also? I hear some army types can get boring pretty fast, so I'm trying to find a theme that has some flexibility.
I am currently leaning toward World Eaters, but I like Nurgle (in theory and fluff wise) so much that I want to make sure I don't start building the wrong type of army.
Thanks guys!

World Eaters. Dedicated to the God Khorne, very heavily assault oriented which means lots of Berzerkers, possibly Summoned Daemons, Assault Terminators and a Khorne Lord. No Sorcerors or anything like that in a World Eaters force. Lots of Marks of Khorne, both as unit options and on the models. Not a lot of ranged, but Khorne is more against magic that against Ranged firepower, although assault is definitely the preference of his followers. Lots of infantry means you'll need a fair number of transports to keep them safe going across the table, with probably some Melta marine squads as well. The Death Guard are devoted to Nurgle, who is all about endurance. Basically, any force will do so long as it uses Marks of Nurgle with no or few cult squads devoted to another God. Plague Marines should be obvious for a fluffy list, but you won't be constrained to too much assault units with them. Basically, game-wise, World Eaters offer more chance to create a fluff list, whilst Death Guard is like a regular force with Mark of Nurgle. Both offer massive amounts of conversion capability models-wise. If you were to ask me, I would choose World Eaters, as they give more a fluffy force to play with. The whole Disease and Pestilence thing the Death Guard have going on doesn't appeal to me either, whilst a blood stained maniac with a chain axe does, I prefer the World Eaters aesthetic basically.

I too prefer the my chaos armies to be aligned to one deity (Nurgle being my favorite as well). The move towards creating lists combining the four powers is what drove me away from CSM (plus the splitting off of the daemon codex). As far as which way you should go...that is a tough one, especially since you haven't played. World Eaters will be able to dish out more pain in melee but the Death Guard will have better survivability. I would say go with your gut and build a force that interests you the most, fluff-wise or aesthetically, and not put too much concern into building an optimized list. Either can be played to good effect with a bit of practice.

Personally i woudl go Worl Eaters if i was startign again.
Put in a coupe of squads of berzerkers and then thrown in some normal CSm sqauds with MoK and meltas for tank poppping (but with MoK they can still be good on the charge). Put each squad in a Rhino and they are still not all that expensive.
Chaos assault termies are expensive to get (due to the lack of claw arms in the kits), but if you are plannign on getting the FW kit anyway you might as well but a pack of SM Assautl termeis and then put the FW kits of them, that way all of you lovely claws come with the kit.
To make the termeis REALLY nasty, give them MoK and make them champions with twin claws.....that will give them all 6 attacks on the charge and they will look awesoem whiel doign it too.
maybe put a chain fist/combi-melta model in each squad incase they assault a tank.
Just remember, there is nothgin sayign that Worl Eaters flat out dont take any heavy weaposn at all. In fact a Defiler with 4 DCCWs pounding across the tabel strikes me as very fluffy indeed.

Thanks for all of the feedback guys. Such a great forum. I've had so many questions answered in the last few days.
I might go with a Deathguard theme and throw in a squad of zerkers and paint them all nurgly
I probably wont know for sure until I buy them. I'm pretty indecisive when it comes to wargaming. I want to buy it all but never enough $$$$.

You coudl always come up with your own warband or renegade force, that way you codl make up fluff to explain a specific reason why your 'zerkers are teaming with nurgle. Or just say they are doign it for the blood!!!

I went down the same route as yourself, I choose Thousand Sons as my main force and have been building them up I'm at 1500 points now.
Now I have a playable force I'm looking into painting up another chaos faction of the same points, then I will have the option of two different armies or the choice of combining the them for larger games or just for swapping things around.

I have 3 chaos marine armies: Khorne, Nurgle and Slaanesh. I like them all for different reasons, but generally tend to play Khorne more often than not. They were just always my first chaos joy. My khorne force only has a single unit of berserkers in it, but still has some potent hand to hand capability, but also some decent shooting ability as well. It is supplemented by some forge world pieces and can be nasty. There is something to be said for the mad frenzied dash of the followers of khorne towards the enemy. Chain axes backed up by bad attitude are a definite bad touch in close combat. The only thing is you need to use some serious cover to get to the enemy intact *and* have enough fire support to keep the enemy busy while your berserkers get into assault range. Many people play a khornate marine army as *only* berserkers and other close combat units. As with any one trick pony that force is easy to deal with. You need to make sure your army is balanced enough to cover the assault or your assasult will disappear before it has any impact.
I like Nurgle and I like the story behind him as a chaos power, but I don't play my nurgle marines as often, because they really can be a little unbalancing. Feel no pain on some of the units is just crazy, and that toughness of 5 makes them *very* hard to kill. This army is also supported by a bunch of Forge world pieces and I enjoy playing it, but my friends get tired of the feel no pain rules so I don't do it very often. I like the slow plodding inevitability of the nurgle army, and really enjoy using my plague ogryns on the table top. They tend to worry my friends so much they will waste many turns of multiple units firing just to kill them. They have no ranged ability and d6 poisoned hand to hand attacks, and always move as if in difficult terrain so they are pretty easy to avoid, but they still cause panic. The special nurgle units from forge world are also cool in their somewhat gross weapons and such.
I won't go into slaanesh specifics here since the OP was only really interested in Khorne or Nurgle...
Both forces have interesting back stories and some really cool add ons that can be found at Forge world. Love those plague drones!! I would recommend that if you really can't decide, that you build smaller forces of each and give them a try on the table top and see which style force you prefer playing the most. Then build further on that one. You can always use the other force as khorne or nurgle marked units in whichever list you decide to make the biggest.
Good luck with whichever you choose.

In reality I'd go both, the Vraks campaign included some really cool looking stuff for both of those particular armies. Always an avid fan of bio/daemonic-machinery, I was thrilled to see things such as the Blood-Slaughterer and the Blight Drones become actual models that one can acquire, and if you're hitting up forgeworld I'd recommend them both, though the blight Drone have negative reports in performance who is going to care? It looks so cool!
If you are Mandated to choose then I recommend Nurgle. Good fluff (he's basically a plague spreading Santa), really cool models from both the gw and forgeworld sites, decent ability to compete (slow but pretty hard to kill units and one of the best troops, in the form of Plague Marines, for rather arguably the entire game), and a range of painting possibilities for the army itself

The World Eaters legion has been splintered to the point where a single squad of Khorne Berzerkers hitching a ride with a Nurgle-oriented warband isn't out of the question. After all, those guys just want to be pointed towards the enemy and told "get em!" Maybe the Chaos Lord in question decided he needed the close-combat muscle and hired them for practical rather than ideological reasons, and sends them charging toward enemy guns with no regard for their survival. After all, they're just deranged, expendable Khorne worshippers.
It doesn't really work in the other way around though. I can't wrap my head around a Khorne-heavy force taking along plague marines, or even a force that's a 50/50 split. If you end up going for a mixed army, I would lean towards Nurgle with a side of Khorne.
Really though, it's up to you - just do what you think is cool.

If a group of plague marines just happened to show up on the battle field in support of a khorne force I really doubt they would refuse their help in drawing blood for the blood god. There doesn't have to be some far arcing reason why they are together, beyond being at the same place at the same time and combined chaos goodness can cause more havoc than non-combined chaos goodness.
