I was wondering if anyone had successfully converted zoanthropes into hive guard or how you could do it if you wanted to (I have a unit but they are just one of those things that you have horrid luck with)

Yeah, there's a really simple way to convert Zoanthropes to Hiveguard. Here's my step by step tutorial:

1. Go on eBay
2. Sell Zoanthrope
3. Buy Hive Guard

There's really no conceivable way you could, they look nothing alike. Trade them in the swap shop here on Dakka, or buy them elsewhere.

It's not impossible fluffwise, nids endlessly mutate so could evolve a Zoeyish-looking creature that fights like a Hive Guard. But it would take some work to end up with a creature that looks interesting and believable as a HG, as opposed to just some bits stuck randomly together.

The biggest visual issue is that the standard Zoeys float, but HG don't. It's pretty easy to add a warrior body to a Zoanthrope head (replacing the shrunken Zoey body) - if you can also add some organic gun barrels to the head (to justify it being so oversized), that would be a reasonable counts-as HG.

Or, if you're a crap converter, selling/swapping the models as SRM suggests is certainly an easier option.
