Wondering Why the Emperor Left
|
I was hoping someone would know how to paint Orks like the opening cinematic of the original DoW, a more yellow/brownish color instead of the usual bright green. As I am making a horde army the easiest way to get this affect the better. Also any weathering affects I can use on their equipment or clothing to make them look like they fight a lot and often instead of the usual rust and soot would be great. Thanks

I would think for the Dawn of War Orks you'd need yellows and browns as well as greens, with lots of layering/highlighting. How you'd go about this I don't know
As for weatehirng you can go with the scuffed look on plating. Just go over the edges of plates (after the main colour is painted) in silver and then light-heavy drybrush on silver to the plate. Works a treat.

I find that mixing a touch of the appropriate brown into the greens for Ork skin gives a more natural, muted look. For example, when I wanted to tone down and slightly darken my nobs to separate them from the boys, I used the equivalent of Scorched Brown in Orkhide Shade as a base, Snakebite Leather in Goblin Green as the highlight, and a mix of the two in Snot Green for the mid-tone.
If I'm remembering the look correctly, the DoW Orks were more about painted metal with chips and scratches then they were about rust. If that's the case, check out tutorials for sponge weathering. It's great for adding chips and flakes beyond the basic drybrushed edge.

You could try using some of the more desaturated colors, such as Gretchin Green or Catachan Green. It goes a long way towards realism. Also, washing with Devlan Mud dulls the color, adding a lot of brown to the mix.

Muted greens and browns as your base color mixed lighter as your first coat with bleached bone then wash to darken the recesses and highlight back up using the different greens, depending on the exact shade you could try orkhide shade/knarloc green a bit of brown? just make sure they're well thinned and you take time you should still be able to do them quite quickly?

First of all, I giggled a bit over the topic. Realistic orcs? Isn't that like saying "Realistic unicorn"?
Anyway... Try painting them one shade lighter than you would normally do, and then use brown wash like a maniac on them. That will give them a more green/brown look.

sounds to me like a medium/bright yellowish brown, washed over with greens.

my recomendation is to think out of the box...try using dark yellows over a black base (drybrushing) and you will end up with a kind of greenish brown, a good idea for "realistic" Orkz...
Now, been totally honest i think that orks should have diferent skin colours each so you should try using every technique available and just have fun... because orks are all about having fun...

Just paint 'em any old way (green if ya want) and then apply a brown wash or something. That's my 2 cents!

I'm sorry, but drybrushing yellow, a really weak color, over black, a strong color, will look absolutely horrendous. Not just on Orks, it'll look bad anywhere.

It isn't an easy thing to do as the Ork models are some of the least realistic GW produces. I would suggest using some of their more earthy greens, like gretchin green. Give them a wash of devlan mud and keep the higlights subtle and don't use the artificial looking greens.
