I am in the process of building a small battleforce and I have an ironclad dreadnought that I need to finish. I've got everything except the base. I have no idea how to go around painting the rock base. I've seen people suggesting codex gray and skull white drybrush etc. Any other tips on how to do this? Thanks!

Note: Can I mix chaos black and skull white for a grey? I'm trying to make do if possible.

I don't know how to paint the rocks, but a white/black mixture will produce a very dark grey.

You can most definitely mix black and white for grey when painting a dread base, I would even recommend it.

1)You will have more control of the final shade.

2)Rock isn't always going to be a uniform color. So it doesn't really matter if the paint isn't mixed 100%.

Try mixing maybe a 1:1 black/white for a base coat. Then add some white to the mix and give a heavy drybrushing. Then ad some more white to the mix and give it a lighter drybrushing, and so on.

Hope this helps, good luck!

I have done my rockbases like this. First I primed the base black. Then I did consecutively lighter drybrushes of dark grey, light grey, bone color, and lastly skull white. The last step was a thinned down wash of badab black to tie the colors together.

Hope this might help you,
