I do not have my BRB in front of me (at work) and i'm not sure if its been brought up or not.

At my local store its always been a rule that if you have a unit that assaults into an already in progress combat, that unit cannot be targetted by the enemy unit that round of assault. Before I just went with this rule and never looked into it. But looking into the BRB I cannot find anywhere that it specifically states you cannot direct your attacks towards that unit that just joined, it only says you can only target units in base to base contact. Any clarification on this?

I apologize in advance if this has been brought up already and/or I'm just slowed and missed a FAQ or the page in the BRB.

The BRB FAQ tries to clear this up, by telling you that "start of combat" is before attacks are made, but after assault moves.

This means that you can attack any unit you are in btb with, regardles of when they joined the assault.

It is quite a commonly misinterpreted rule.

It is covered on page 41 in the rulebook and by this from the latest main rule FAQ:

Page 41 – Multiple Combats, Attacking.
A third bullet point should be added, as follows:
• Models that at the beginning of the combat (before
any model attacked) were engaged with more than
one enemy unit, but were in base contact with just one
of the enemy units, must attack that unit.
Page 41 – Multiple Combats, Attacking.
In all three bullet points, the word ‘combat’ will be
changed to ‘round of combat’.

It also follows the rules on page 35 which defines wat it means to be 'engaged' with an enemy unit.

In short, the rule from your local store is in error.
