One Canoptek Scarab in a Swarm
|
I've always wondered how the necron build and repair stuf.
it's obious that they do because the codex says when necrons phase out they are repaired and replacement parts are built. what i want to know is what materials do they use and how do they shape and make parts for troops and buildings.
aswell how do they produce power.

They use a self repairing, living metal called Necrontyr.

Necrontyr was the name of the pre-Necron civilisation.

The metal is just 'living metal'.
As for repairing stuff, aside from the self repair abilities the necrons have:
1. I seem to remember reading a story or two that suggests Scarabs have a repair role
2. Phylectery scarabs you can find on lords (the wargear)
3. Tomb spyders, although they seem to be more liken to guard dogs than care takers I do seem to recall reading that they play a salvage role on the battlefield (this may just be DOW) and float around inside tombs maintianing stuff
4. Crypt stalker - this is an uber tomb spyder that protects and repairs the bigger necron structures (APOC, no official model as yet).
There's a short story about a mechanicus group finding the remains of a monolith onboard a ship (spacehulk?) and the monoliths power matrix wakes up when they tinker with the wreckage and sends the living metal in to overdrive and starts spewing warriors from it's portal. This is just supercharging the already self repairing living metal though.

Its usually called living metal, but I believe the name for the self-repairing skin is necrodermis.

actually i have to dissagree necrodermis is a type of necron metal used to bind the c'tans essance together the same type of metal is used on necron ships and warsyths but i don't think that all necron metal is necrodermis i think that necrodermis is just one type of living metal

They use Necrodermis to build everything. The C'tan were originally put in the Necrodermis as a living shell for them and the codex tells us that it was used to build ships that would be able to keep them in stasis in order to survive long space travel. The Necrontyr were ticked into forever becoming entombed in the same stuff as the C'tan so they to are in Necrodermis, or Living Metal

but if that were true then surley all necron units would be warsyths themselves imagine warriors that ignor armour and invn save in combat.

Yeah, I didn't get the impression that the 'living metal' was a necrodermis. I think the word 'necrodermis' is a singular noun used to describe the living metal containers of the C'tan only. Kind of like a special variety of living metal. Incidentally, isn't necrodermis latin for 'death skin?'
Lexicanum supports this view point. According to them, a 'necrodermis' is a C'tan only thing. The 'living metal' that the rest of the Necron tech (and race) is composed of has no real name that we know of.

I'm sorry to say I'm still not totally convinced about the whole necrodermis thing if all necrons were made of necrodermis they'd all be epic in combat but we know that warriors arn't so i'll refer to their bodies as living metal.
annyway nobody has said anything about how they produce power yet

No one knows what powers the Necron constructs or how they were built in the first place.
Living Metal is also of unknown origin.
My guess for power would be Zero Point Energy. somehow, they have tapped it.
