Played a quick 500 point game last night with my friend, I was rocking my blood angels and he was playing with an ork army we put together from an AoBR box.

Here's a scenario we ran into and I couldn't help but feel it went a little haywire.

I assault a broken squad of his boyz/nob with a broken down assault squad. His unit is 2 Boyz/1 Nob with a Power Klaw. I score 3 normal wounds and 2 wounds with a PF for a total of five. Before rolling the saves he assigns the wounds to the unit as follows, puts 1PF wound on a boy, another PF wound on the 2nd boy, the 1 normal wound on the nob. He then puts the other 2 remaining normal wounds on the boyz with the PF wounds on them. Even though he can't roll for the PF wounds he rolls for the three normal wounds, he doesn't make the two saves on the boyz (for the normal wounds) but makes the save for the wound on the Nob. The boyz are killed and the Nob is still there, with no wounds.

I already know that the whole combat series was messed up because the combat order based on the unit's initiative didn't go in order. That mainly has to do with the fact that I was a little sauced at the time ;P.

I mainly want to just get a thorough explanation on how the assign of wounds goes in complex units because it is very confusing. Any thoughts?

As long as the wounds are distributed evenly (no model can have 2 until all have 1) he can place them where he would like. The type of wound does not matter until you resolve them.

For would allocation for each initiative level:
1. Assign one wound of any type to a model in the squad until every model has one wound.
2. Assign one wound of any type until every model has two wounds.
3. Assign one wound of any type until every model has two wounds.
4. etc.
5. Separate each type of model equipment load out into separate groups.
6. Roll the wounds for each group together.
7. Remove models for failed or bypassed saves in each group.
8. Move to the next initiative level.

Assuming the regular wounds and PF wounds cane from sources at a different initiative, you would allocate the regular wounds first before even rolling to hit with the initiative 1 PF.

Say that the Sergeant of the assault squad had a power sword instead of a power fist, then his attacks would be striking at the same initiative as the other attacks. In that case, he did do it correct. Usually people don't bother even rolling for the other wounds if there is enough power weapon wounds to kill off that group, because extra wounds are just wasted.

The extra wounds don't even count for combat resolution (p39 under Determine Assault Results). So in the end the boyz took 2 wounds (because they only had 2 wounds to lose) and if the Nob managed to kill off 3 marines then he will have won the combat by 1.
