Well, we all know that the SHuttle Program ended, and many people are extremely disappointed, almost like they think our space program has ended. Well, I think the program ending could be a good thing in the long run for NASA. Nasa is going to give out contracts to private companies to get astronauts into orbit, leaving more time for NASA to develop exploration vehicles and technologies. Also, there are two new vehicles on the way within the next few years; one of them a heavy lift rocket, and one of them a rocket to put astronauts into space. The primary goal of these is not to put astronauts into low earth orbit and to the ISS; it is to put a man on a near earth asteroid, then Mars. I think the shuttle program's cancellation might have opened up more doors that it closed.

Though it was more about the closing of the shuttle program than anything else...

But this is an after the fact thread, and is more about moving forward; NASA's next steps, etc. Different threads imho.
