This is a rip from the original post regarding what is the "highest point value you can think of from one unit" thread. Instead of that we have an Independent Character vs. Independent Character situation. Point value worth WILL come into play and it doesn't matter. The goal is to reveal the most bad-arse character out there.
Start? Someone beside me.

Lysander is damn ripped, but he is really cost prohibitive. My main problem with him is that he has no ranged weapon, and also has the Bolter Drill ability, meaning no matter what kind of squad I stick him with I feel like I got cheated. I prefer Tigurius. His wide range of abilities gives him far greater versatility, allowing him to work in a variety of situation.

Then Tigurius takes a powerclaw from a warboss and gets gimped immediately because he doesn't have an invuln. In a real game it would probably be a krak missile though.
As for me I'd go with Mephiston (Heheheh) I know he's pricey, but he's worth it. MC statline on an infantry base plus he's a psyker. And don't forget he can use WoS so he moves like jump infantry. Complete domination.

If it's an IC vs. IC fight, I'll take the Sanguinor at 275, please. I don't think there's an IC out there that Mathhammer won't allow him to beat.

Marneus Calgar. He gets an extra attack....for having a second powerfist. Who does that? Though he is expensive as balls...

I've always liked Logan Grimnar. Splitting my attacks between power weapon and power fist. Makes him equally good at clearing infantry or armour.

Vect is pretty nasty. 2+ Inv, 6 attacks on the charge with 3+ wounding power weapons and Preferred Enemy. Plus S10 orbs for causing Instant Death. 240 points.

While he would be good in a SC vs SC, he isn't actually an IC. He can't go in a unit. But me, I'd take Skullhumper (Skulltaker) on a juggernaut. If you don't have EW, you're dead meat. Bye bye C'tan, Mephiston, and half the other big gribblies out there.

That's who I was waiting for to get mentioned. If you fail that 2+ in a one on one fight, you deserve to lose.

For his price, you won't find another HQ with the same level of survivability and close combat lethality as Lysander. He's beyond ridiculous for a Space Marine captain.
Mephiston is also a wee bit silly, being essentially a hideable, flying Swarmlord.

So long as you can pass a Psychic Test in his movement phase then he does indeed have an invulnerable save.

The Sanguinor is great, 6 attacks on the charge with 3+ invulnerable save, but re-rolling all your fails to hit and to wound against the enemy character? That's what makes those 275 points worth it
