Hey, Its been a yr since i've been one here and ive been plannin on makin a soul drinker army but im not sure of where to start, so far i got some vanilla marines but from there idk, ive read the lexicanum and studied the soul drinkers but im not sure of how to go about it. it looks like theirs more to them than just worshiping the emperor (not the imperium) and hating the chaos/daemon worshipers. ive also read their chapter master has a spider body which might make things a bit more complicated... but again im not sure of where to start, help as best you can.

'Another day nearer the battle
So drink up, lads and look brave.
For another day nearer the battle
Is another day nearer the grave.'

I am collecting and painting a Soul Drinkers army right now. I'm somewhat glad I'm not the only one
If you haven't read the 5 books that have been released(maybe 6 I've been out of the BL loop for a couple of months) you'll find that they were corrupted by chaos mutations but turned back from chaos in time to save their souls. Their geneseed is still largely corrupted but after finding a cure they have just started recruiting more scouts, many of which die in a coup by some of those very scouts. They are low on vehicles, have only about 5 sets of terminator armor, no dreadnoughts and very few assault marines after their veteran assault marines turned into followers of Khorne. While this makes it very hard to compete on the table top if you stick to the fluff, I find it fun to base your tabletop tactics off of the established canon of your chapter. I run a scout oriented army and use the characters from the fluff to flesh it out(Librarian as Sarpedon, Techmarine as Lygris, Asssault sergeant as Graevus with no jetpacks, Dreo counts as Telion). If you don't want to do the conversions(which I suggest using chaos spawn/possessed parts for) then you can simply call them Soul Drinkers pre mutation. Good luck with your army, if you take the time to read up on them they are very flavorful.

I love the Soul Drinkers, and would do an army if I hadn't already had my Salamanders and Red Corsairs so I cant be arsed having more marines.

I like what Obrek said, about doing a Pre-mutation Soul Drinkers army. In the first book their chapter master is called Gorgoleon and his primary weapon is a power fist. So you could go with Pedro Kantor as Gorgoleon and having Sternguard as scoring, backed up by a novice Librarian Sarpedon. This would work twofold - the Soul Drinkers are a very in-your-face Chapter and use loads of pods and thunderhawks, but not many tanks. Secondly, they are quite an assualt based army, so once your Sternguard blow stuff to smithereens you just mass assault in a bubble around Gorgoleon/Kantor getting +1 attack for everyone within 12" (or is it 6"? - I don't use pedro) so Veterans would have 4 attacks on the charge.

I know people are going to shoot this down straight away, but if you put locator beacons on a couple of your pods you can Heroic Intervention a Vanguard squad and assualt with it the turn it comes in which would defo fit the fluff. But Vanguard can suck and die a lot for Vanilla marines and be quite expensive points wise.

The army won't work against everyone and will probably get gubbed by Guard constantly but would be fun and could take a lot of people by suprise
