I have recently started painting up my Space Wolves, and I have recently gotten stuck. I have Wolf Guard leading my packs of 15 Blood Claws, and do the point restrictions placed on my list, the Wolf Guard have only the most base equipment. I am trying to stick to traditional Space Wolves paint schemes, but I need some imediate visual distinction between my Blood Claws and my wolf guard. I can't think of anyway to distinguish them that will make sense in within the normal paint scheme.

5,000 points of Tau
2,000 points of Space Wolves
1,000 points of Raven Guard
Almost none of which is painted.

The normal paint scheme has different colored shoulder pads for wolf guard.

Blood claws have red/yellow pads, guard has black/yellow pads.

Other suggestion, different colored base edges.

Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one?

Well, here is what I did:

remember the wolf guard had different painted shoulder pads (yellow and black, and yellow and red for Blood claws).

I also only used the long wolf pelts that drape over their backs and down to their feet for the wolf guard; I also put any equipment that had wolf tailsmans on them as well. For my personal guard I took the wolfen helmets to distinguish them even more.

And in case you were wondering I spattered blood red over the wulfen models to distinguish those.

I find modeling is a better way than painting to distinguish if you plan ahead enough.

Edit: If you look closely, you'll see that on the backpack vents on top there are slight ridges to those spheres on each side; I paint those little slivers gold for wolf guard.
