Me and my gaming group has been thinking of playing Flames of war. Here is our dilema we are tired of paying high prices for models. So we are seriously considering using HO 1/72 scale plastic kits.you can get around 50 plastic infantry for less than 20 dollars.Has anybody bought or owns both and how well do they fit with the game.I have checked the vehicles and Wiki said the Aircraft are totally different scale than 1/100 that is the Norm for FOW.Also for stand we were just gong to make our own.If anybody has comparasion piks that they could post that would be even better.

Shouldn't be a problem but you should also look out for the plastic soldier company who are intorducing 15mm hard plastic ranges for very good prices. There are other threads here on their tanks.

1/72 scale figures are 20mm scale and are bigger than the FoW 15mm scale figures. Models will be taller and vehicles will look somewhat wimpy next to the 1/72 scale figs. There are rulesets out there geared towards 20mm, though, and you will never want for models in that scale. The 1/72 scale vehicle lines are pretty comprehensive nowadays.

If you want to stay with FoW and FoW vehicles look into Plastic soldier company as they are coming out with some decent 15mm plastic troops that are very affordable. Only problem is the line is rather on the new side so is not too comprehensive yet.

Final option is to play some kind of Fearless vet army or a tiger company that doesn't require as many models to play with, thus reducing your overall costs.

I see no reason not to play with 1/72 models if you are just playing with your own group. I would probably multiply the ranges and movement distances by 1.5 but other than that you should be fine.

It's the vehicles that are the problem.

1/72 is equivalent to 20mm.

The boxed 1/72 plastic sets which are widely available and cheap are thinner than traditional metal 20mm wargame figures and tend to include less useful poses. OTOH they are so cheap that it becomes effective to buy two boxes and not use the poses you don't want.

There is a huge range of 1/72 scale vehicles on the market. They tend to cost about £7 to £10 for a large vehicle kit, however there is a range called Armourfast which is £9.99 for two tanks. They are simple snapfit models, ideal fo wargaming.

There are quite a lot of planes available in 1/144 scale which while half the scale of 1/72 is arguably appropriate for models which are suspended high about the table top action.

It's aircraft only at the moment, I think.

I don't see what benefit you would really gain from going with 1/72 scale infantry... I can get a company sized box of fow figures, at retail price for 50 USD (and I usually get it for 20% off, so even cheaper...), and that will have 100+ minis in it... You'd have to spend a lot more than that to get the same number of minis in 1/72nd scale... and lets not even mention armored vehicles...

Were there be dragons....

Theres a blog out on the internet I read ages ago that used 28mm models and the Flames of War rules succesfully, as long as you can adjust the game scales in propotion it would work easily with 72nd, which in england is much cheaper then 15mm - I cant remember the name of the blog though :/

£5.99 (MRRP) for a box of 48 figures. That's about $9.60.

Vehicles may be more expensive depending on the exact kit chosen. There is a very wide choice, however, including the Armour Fast.

I got my hands on some Skytrex models at the weekend. Very nice sculpts indeed. A little on the heavy side compared to BF's resin hybrid models but otherwise very nice indeed.

I'm thinking of picking up some of their stuff.

Much larger range of miniatures from what I can tell, you can get bags of 50 metal minis for 8-9 USD depending.
