I was thinking of starting a new army and was wondering do you need minotaurs in your army for it to be any good.

Nope, it's Bestigors you'll need.
Minotaurs has the potential to be great, but it takes skill and luck for them to work. Bestigors will be more forgiving, and is almost always the better choice.

I disagree with snapsepaven. I have both units, and have almost always seen my minos (4x2) do better. They can hit hard and faster then the bestigors. My bestigors are really a toss up, but i have yet to be let down by my minos, especially when they managed to rip apart a 50 strong unit of black orcs with a bsb over 2 turns. Stomp is a helpful addition to the combats.
Bestigors have the benefit of primal fury, but with only having 1 attack each, it doesn't hit as hard.

Don't forget that Minos cause an Impact Hit each (well, each one in B2B anyway) when they charge. If you add a Gorebull or a Doombull to the unit, they automatically have Frenzy and the two character options to d3 impact hits. Throw in an extra hand weapon (they're already strong enough to negate heavy armor or light/armor shield...) and that's a good number of attacks. Great Weapons are another option if you REALLY want to stuff someone's armor save though. Plus they look pretty awesome!

You must take Minotaurs to win. Bestigors are nice, and a block of them can have more wounds, but at the end of the day, Minotaurs eat enemy units. Figuratively and literally.
Run with 2 hand weapons if your opponent doesn't have high toughness or high armor saves. Run great weapons if they do. And alwyas, always, ALWAYS put a Gorebull or Doombull in the unit. That will give your unit automatic frenzy, and the hero or lord will gain an extra attack for every unit they defeat. Oh, and D3 impact hits are nice, too.
Minotaurs might be 5 points more expensive than I would like, but your opponent will think they are 55 points too cheap!

Minotaurs are fun and work well. But they aren't a requirement to win. The only real requirement is a healthy number of gors. Everything else can be changed to suit personal taste.
